INDEPENDENT PLAYGROUND
CD101 has a time slot each week (Sunday, midnight - 2:00 AM) devoted to cool independent music called Independent Playground, and it's hosted by Tom Butler. Here's the local music Tom played this past week:

RADIO RADIO
Pat Dull and his Media Whores are taking over the airwave this coming week, with two appearances on the local radio circuit. On Thursday, March 2, 2000, the band will be playing live on the air on The Ohio State University's radio station The Underground (91.1 FM on OSU campus, Units Cable Ch. 19, or on the web at http://www.underground.fm/. Then, on Tuesday, March 7, 2000, the band will be live on the pirate Radio Free Columbus (91.5 FM) For both nights, the shows begin at around 8:00 - 9:00 PM!

SHOWCASE
Columbusmusic.com will be hosting a showcase March 4 at Little Brother's. The showcase will feature Throat Culture, Templeton, Go Robot, Go!, and Nude. Doors open at 9 p.m.

PRESTON FURMAN UPDATE
I read a rumor on the Lizard Family Web site about a Preston Furman CD coming out on Seldom Scene Records, as well as a Seldom Scene re-release of PF's Ticonderoga. Well, here's the word from Bim. He says that he still wants to do the CD, and the music and artwork is done, but the CD is looking kind of unlikely. Bim said that he "kind of smells a break up" of PF.

Bim said that as far as the 7" reissue, there was a time when he really wanted to do that because there were only 300 copies, but he doesn't want to deal with Lizard to get the tapes. He said he doesn't know why he only did 300 to begin with.

RECORD RELEASE
My Uncle Wayne's Beat Hits 7" has been released by Seldom Scene Records. My Uncle Wayne has been described as "a rusty-chain link fence Sonic Youth or a more deconstructed Flaming Lips, think 'so happy together' era Grifters and you're playing ball."

GROUNDSWELL RECORDS
Local upstart Groundswell Records has added another band to its roster. Soda VS Pop, a great indie-emo band, has joined the label. Look for a September release. I will be interviewing labelmates Them Wranch for an upcoming issue of Cringe.

SCRAWL
It seems that Cringe has been providing you with a little bit of wrong information. Scrawl's Web site is at http://www.scrawl.net. Don't forget Scrawl's last show with drummer Dana Marshall is March 16 at Little Brother's.

LOWDOWN REPORTER WANTED
The Lowdown is looking for some new blood to be involved in The Lowdown column. Basically, it would involve writing on a weekly basis about various newsworthy/noteworthy musical things going down in the Columbus area, such as record-release parties, new bands, new recordings by local bands, etc. Perhaps a weekly rotation of different writers might fit the bill. In any event, if you're interested, contact Joel at [email protected].

CRINGE
Local band Cringe will be releasing their first full length CD (called Systematic) on February 25th at the Alrosa Villa (5055 Sinclair Rd). It will be available in all the record stores throughout Columbus, distributed independently by the band. It will also be available for the first time on the 25th at the Alrosa Villa!

GREEN SKY GREY
Green Sky Grey is currently working on their second CD at Moo Pigface Studios in Gahanna. The band will also be down in Athens on Feb. 25th at Momma Einstien's.

TIM EASTON
Tim Easton has just finished a deal with New West Records, which will enable him to put out another record or two. It's in the final stages of "lawyer land" right now. The plan is to record in April and release it sometime late in the summer. Tim will be returning to Columbus for a bit, and playing at Little Brother's as the opening act on Friday, March 3rd. The backing band will be Chris Burney from Ashtray on upright bass and Justin Crooks from Jive Turkeys on drums. This same band will tour, winding up in Austin for SXSW 2000. The it's back to Columbus to play at Bernie's on Wednesday, March 22nd billed as the Kosher Spears. If you get a chance, check 'em out!

WORKBOOK STUDIO
For those not in the know, Workbook Studio is run by Jon Chinn and Neal Schmitt. Now in their fourth year of operation, they offer a full service recording studio with tons of gear and instruments and the ability to make great records. Check out their Web site at http://www.cringe.com/workbook or give them a call at 421-2310 [614-613-4124 (pager/voicemail)] for rates, info, gear, available times, etc. Even if you just want to check out the studio, they'd be happy to give you the nickel tour. ADAM RELEASE PARTY
Adam will have a CD release party Feb. 25 at Little Brother's. Watershed is also on the bill. The CD, Shin Jim Rui, is being released by Reborn Records out of Nashville. It will be in stores at the end of February.

HEY, PUT THAT BACK
Jon Chinn's "Putting It Back In Their Pants Show" will be Feb. 23 at Bernie's. There will be solo performances by Brad Caulkins (Jive Turkeys, Living Wreck), Annia and Sam Brown (New Bomb Turks, the Velveteens), Noel Sayre (Pretty Mighty Mighty), Nick Shuld (The Ordeal), Chris Forbes (Orchestraville), Post (I Have Mass, Grafton), Jamey Robey (Living Wreck), and Jon Chinn (Pretty Mighty Mighty).

Chinn said that this is going to become a pretty regular thing. There's already one in the works for next month. Contact him if you're interested in getting on it in the future.

... OF A REVOLUTION
... Of A Revolution's "Souls Aflame" was voted Best Independent CD of the 1999 by the folks at CD Baby.

LOOK MOM, MTV
Check out Silo The Huskie's Web site for their MTV Online interview. In it the band talks about the Columbus scene, ComFest, their new recording, the Columbus sound, and the origins of their name. They also have some nice things to say about fellow Columbusites Pat Dull and the Media Whores, Pop Quiz, Superstar Rookie, Pretty Mighty Mighty, and Tiara.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME
Joel asked me to write a little bit about myself, my association with the Columbus scene, and where my bias is-that sort of thing. My first show was Scrawl, New Bomb Turks, TJSA, and the Cheater Slicks at Bernie's. I still have an undying devotion to most of those bands. I also love Them Wranch, Bigfoot, Earwig, Marbles, and countless others.

I run Groundswell Records. So, you'll probably hear a lot about the Groundswell bands. You might also hear a lot about my bands, F**bomb and Luke. Besides that, I will pretty much write about anything I hear about and can get confirmation on. I'm going to try to include a wide range of music -- not just the garage indie rock stuff that you typically hear about in this scene. So, if you're a country, rap, or death metal (or jazz or classical or anything else) don't hesitate to write. I envision taking the Lowdown towards covering the entire Central Ohio music scene.

LUMIA VIBES
CampusVibe's Web site is now up-and-running. The Web site features content from a number of different universities and colleges across the country, including Ohio State. CampusVibe was in town in January to film an up-and-comer on the Columbus music scene, Lumia. The band was formed last year and has played a handful of shows at Bernie's including opening for both Pedro the Lion (Jade Tree Records) and Damien Jurado (SubPop). The 3-minute Lumia feature on CampusVibe is produced MTV-style, combining live footage with an interview.

READY-STEADY-GO LIVE
In the last two months of 1999, Columbus-based band The Revolvers began hosting a series of showcases at the Northberg Tavern. Called "Ready-Steady-Go Live" in honor of the British musical variety television show of the 'sixties, this series spotlights the best in new bands in the area. On Saturday, February 26, 2000, the bill will feature The Peachbones alongside The Revolvers. The Peachbones hail from the Mansfield area, and play what has been called "killer Appalachia rock." The Peachbones are promoting their self-released single, "Johnny Law." The Revolvers have been described as "...a Beatles meet Clash white riot" The show begins at 10:00 P.M. and cover is $4.00.

THE EVOLUTION CONTROL COMMITTEE
In a weird bit of news, local musical/media pranksters The Evolution Control Committee are featured in a recent Wired News top story (http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,34177,00.html) Apparently, ECC is getting a little heat from CBS News over its "Rocked By Rape" 7-inch single (which samples newscaster Dan Rather). More accurately, Eerie Materials (which distributes ECC's records) has received a "legal warning" from CBS to stop distributing the record. To date, The Evolution Control Committee has not gotten a warning letter from CBS, but this might be simply because CBS is a little lazy. SEASON'S END
Season's End is currently recording their 2nd album at Musical Moods Studios in Etna, OH, and looking at a June release. Check them out at http://www.seasonsend.net. The band will also be appearing live on TV 19 (Columbus) from noon-1pm on Friday, Feb 18th. (You can't pick up TV 19 on cable. If you have cable, you'll have to temporarily unhook it)

END OF AN ERA
Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments have called it quits following their Feb. 11 show at Little Brother's. TJSA announced from the stage that it would be their last show. The band ended with "Cheater's Heaven" and Bob Petric smashed his guitar on stage. A new record is still planned for Rock-A-Thon records.

At the same show, Scrawl announced that its March 16 show at Little Brother's would be its last, at least with the current line-up. Drummer Dana is moving to Sweden after the show.

THE BEGINNING OF AN ERA
Them Wranch will be hosting a CD release party at Bernie's on March 17 (St. Patrick's Day). The band will be releasing "Big Noise From East Maynard" on local upstart Groundswell Records. Them Wranch also has a split 7" in the works with Bob City on Burnt Sienna Records.

EVEN LESS SELDOM SCENE
Bim Thomas, founder of Seldom Scene Records, has moved to Cleveland. You might know Bim as the drummer of local heavyweights The Bassholes, Flippin' Hades, and My Uncle Wayne. Seldom Seen is still churning out albums, with the new My Uncle Wayne album topping the list.

Chad Painter has joined the Lowdown as a regular contributor. Next time I'll try ta talk him into a bit of a bio and philosophy just so we know where he's coming from.

ADDENDUMS
You'll find samples of many of the bands mentioned above on the Cringe streaming MP3 radio stations. The 1990's comps on Station 1 include TJSA, New Bomb Turks, Greenhorn, Gaunt and Flippin' Hades tunes. The recent releases on Station 2 include ECC's "Rocked by Rape", cuts from The Stepford Five new CD and the pre-release of the Them Wranch/Bob City split.

THE HOLY MODAL ROUNDERS
The founders of peyote folk (as well as psilocybin folk, stp folk, and mescaline folk), The Holy Modal Rounders, will be playing at the Central Ohio Folk Fest on May 6. Believe it or not, the band began in 1963, and have been influenced by the Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music, Alan Ginsburg, Timothy Leary, The Fugs, Sam Shephard (the playwright), Dock Boggs, Doc Watson, Hoyt Ming, and countless others. COMFEST
There's been a slight change of date for this year's annual Community Festival. Normally, the huge event takes place on the last full weekend in June. Not this year, however! STEPFORD FIVE
A few interviews with The Stepford Five have been posted on the web at Columbusmusic.com and Athens Musician Network. The Athens Musician Network site also includes Real Audio clips of "No Chance" and "Broken Skin," previously unheard tracks from their upcoming debut album MESH. MESH will be available in stores throughout Columbus and online at www.stepfordfive.com starting February 1st.

BREAK-UP! RECORDS
This Saturday, February 5, 2000, Break-Up! Records will be hosting a big, big show for a soon-to-be-released compilation CD, entitled The Best Part of Breaking Up!. The show will be held at Bernie's Bagels/The Distillery, and will feature the astonishing talents of The Pop Quiz, The Marbles, and Pat Dull and his Media Whores. Show starts at 10 PM.

ORACLE LOUNGE CLOSED
Emperors of Bad Luck and Fallout Shelter played at the Oracle Lounge in Wheeling, West Virginia on Saturday, January 29, 1999. This was the last night for live rock music at venue. Chuck the owner said, "Lack of response to many of the out of town bands has made them have to shut down". The local bands in Wheeling were not drawing any crowds either it seems. The sparse crowd on Saturday night proved a major point.

Templeton, Pretty Mighty Mighty and Cringe played at the Oracle several times in the past few months. The bar had only been open since July of 1999.

MUSICTOURBUS
Rick of Musictourbus.com dropped Cringe a couple emails to tell us about a free Internet site designed to help bands build a following outside their local area. In short musictourbus.com assists bands in networking with other bands across the country. Check out the site to register your band and join the network.

NOW PLAYING
I spent the last weekend making the new Cringe MP3 Radio stream a bit more informative. The results? A top level link to a little pop-up window that lists the current and recent tunes. We're also looking into a second and/or less demanding stream for those of ya with slower connections (um, like me).

BETARORIC AND TIARA
Friday, January 28, 2000, marks the release date of two of Columbus' finest bands: Betaroric will be releasing their self-titled debut on Passacaglia Records, and Tiara will be releasing their new album on Anyway Records. Opening the night at Little Brother's will be Pretty Mighty Mighty, whose members Jon Chinn and Neal Schmidt have a stake in the two records (they recorded both).

SECRET GIG
Also on Friday, January 28, 2000, you can enjoy a secret evening of power pop with Paranoid Lovesick (from Cleveland), The Pop Quiz, and Pat Dull and his Media Whores at The Lab. The very next night, at the very same secret location, you can check out Silo the Huskie, Platypus, and other mysterious bands… The Lab (or MADLAB, as it is sometimes known) is on Grant Street, in Columbus. No other details are known…

CRO-MAGS
The classic NYC hardcore band The Cro-Mags have gotten back together and are touring. On Thursday, February 3rd, they'll be playing at the Alrosa Villa here in Columbus, with local punk/hardcore band The Creeps opening, plus a few other bands.

GO ROBOT, GO!
Go Robot, Go!just received a grant from Jim Beam Bourbon. The grant, given once a year to just a few artists nationally, is part of Jim Beam's "emerging artist" program. Apparently, Pat DiNizio, lead singer for the Smithereens and one of the B.E.A.M board members, is impressed with Go Robot, Go!'s talent. More details can be found on their web site over the next few days.

THE STEPFORD FIVE
The Stepford Five will be hosting a CD release party on Friday February 4th at Little Brother's with Templeton and Electric Porn. The CD is called MESH.

ROTTEN TV
Sex-Pistol Johnny Rotten is hosting his own television show on VH-1, Sunday nights at midnight. On the first show, he gets booted off the Roseanne Show for refusing to promise that he'll be nice to Roseanne. Also, he demonstrates his apathy towards rock memorabilia by blowing up a Beatles Shea Stadium ticket and Sid Vicious' suicide note. Kinda funny, and it could get better. Joe Bob sez check it out.

THE GO
Fans of the mid-70's Detroit punk sound (Iggy, MC5) might get a kick out of a band playing at Bernie's this Friday, January 21, 2000. The Go, if possible, dumb down the Stooges formula even more than the Stooges themselves thought wise. Their debut album, cleverly entitled The Go, is available on CD and vinyl on Sub Pop Records.

SPACE RANKS
Quarkspace's The Hidden Moon was nominated for Best Spacerock Album and Best Cover Art for 1999 by the Quebec, Canada avant-garde radio show, Delire Musical. Hughscore (featuring Hugh Hopper of Soft Machine) won and Daevid Allen (of Gong and founder of Soft Machine) was the other nominee. That's perty good company I'd say!

Quarkspace also made both Delire's Top 100 CDs of 1999 and Gagliarchives Top 100 Progressive CDs of 1999 with both The Hidden Moon and Spacefolds 5. Look for more Quarkspace music in Magnet Magazine, Issue 45 and at the Quarkstock 2000 spacerock fest.

LONE MOAN
Brian Casey (Honk, Wail and Moan, Mary Adam 12 and even further back to Larry and the Groove Children) is providing piano accompaniment expressionistic German silent films at Wexner Center. Last Friday showing was Faust. This Friday, January 21 features The Student Of Prague and Waxworks.

LOUD AND LOCAL
Anyone out there remember WRZR Z Rock 103.1 FM? Well, in 1993 the station put out Loud and Local, a compilation of local (hard) rock. Shortly after the release the station changed hands and formats and the CDs kinda got lost in the shuffle ... until now. CAMPUS VIBE
I'm gonna paraphrase Chip "Swizzlestick" Midnight here a bit ... A new Nashville-based "on-line college cable network" interested almost exclusively in streaming video (live concerts, student films, student theater, etc.) is starting up in mid-February. The company is working with 20 universities (OSU being one) to develop content for the site, sending out a few representatives to meet with the OSU interns to show them the ropes this week. They will also be filming Lumia and The Spoo Monkeys at Bernie's on the Tuesday, January 11 for the site. Look for the results in a month or so at http://www.campusvibe.com/.

'90s GBV'S

RECORD RELEASE PARTY
Pat Dull and his Media Whores have recently released a new single ("Its About Time"), and will be celebrating the event with a Record Release Party this Friday, January 7, 2000, at The High Five. The single has been released on Break-Up! Records, and joining the Whores at the High Five that evening will be their pals The Marbles and The Pop Quiz.

SATURDAY NIGHT TAPED
Each Saturday night (well, early Sunday Morning), NBC has been broadcasting old episodes of Saturday Night Live. Starting at 2 AM on Sunday morning, an hour after the "live" SNL has aired, an entire episode of a "golden age" SNL is shown, including the rather eclectic musical guests. Even more interesting, NBC is broadcasting them in roughly the same order in which they originally appeared. In the past few weeks, David Bowie has performed "The Man Who Sold The World, and The B-52's have sang "Rock Lobster." It's a treasure trove for those who didn't have a VCR (or weren't even alive) back in the 1970's!

ANDY KAUFMAN
In case you haven't noticed, there has been a blitz of media activity regarding the late, great Andy Kaufman, including numerous television programs, a Hollywood-ized film, and at least two full-length books. The while both the movie (which simply gives the viewer Jim Carrey's two-hour "eemitation" of Kaufman) and one of the books (Bob Zmuda's questionable memoirs) may not be the finest goods to foist upon this world, at least they are triggering a floodgate of original Kaufman products on the market. Two weeks ago, "Andy Kaufman Live on the Midnight Special" was released, and this week sees the long-overdue release of "Andy Kaufman Live at Carnegie Hall." In addition, several original videocassettes have been re-released, some with additional footage. It's a good time to be an Andy Kaufman fan.

OUT WITH THE OLD
A few tidbits sitting around that really have nothing to do with each other ...

Oldfield's on High is knocking (has knocked?) out some walls to make it more of a "club" type venue. It always was a kinda tight space, but they have Jaeger on tap!

On a related but totally useless note, for the first time ever I drank enough alcohol to actually get physically sick. I'll spare ya the details -- just blame the variety and big 00 celebration. It's back to bagels, juice and ginger ale fer me.

Kolin of Fenster has decided to leave the band to pursue teaching and to start a family. He'll be with the band through the month of January which leaves about two more chance to catch him in the act or change his mind.

It looks like CD 101's Web site is down for some changes. OK, I'll link to it. But I tell ya it ain't gonna do ya much good.

And on a similar subject, we'll be revamping and possibly flipping around some of the common features on Cringe. The addition of the Cringe Radio streaming MP3 station is one of the first "experimental" steps. The Resident sites have already changed a bit with more related ideas being kicked around. I think I'm also finally officially killing off the Weekly Site feature. And, as always, anyone with ideas or wishing to contribute in some way, let us know anyway ya can.

TIM EASTON
As some of you may know, local musician Tim Easton (of Haynes Boys and Kosher Spears fame) has recently moved out west to California. In the process, he has landed himself a nifty little record deal with New West Records. The results should be out next spring.

WILLIE PHOENIX
Another local artist has released a holiday-related tune for the masses, just in the "nick" of time! Willie Phoenix released a holiday single this past week called "Happy Holly Christmas." CD101's Front Stage debuted it this past Monday night. You can also request to hear it (in Columbus) on WCBE (90.5 fm).

That's right, Cringe now has a streaming MP3 station. Currently it's set up for fast connections (T1/cable/ISDN). I'm still working on it and probably a low speed (lo-fi) version, but ya get the idea. Scott Brown and a friend have started a new label called Nugget Records, and have just finished a punk-ska-hardcore compilation of bands from Columbus. TRASHFEST
This year's X-mas Trashfest is Saturday, December 18 at Little Brother's, beginning around 8pm. For the uninitiated, the Trashfest takes those who may be known in the local music scene and puts them in bands, skits and on instruments that are not their forte. It's all done in the spirit of the Holidays and it benefits the homeless.

This could also be yer chance to see Dan Dougan and me in the squared circle ...

CHELSIE'S LAST CALL
We'll I made it down to Chelsie's Monday night for their very last show. From the tiny bit I know, the show was at least one employee's way of going out with a big bang and in the buff. Yes, it was a heavy night including Kneejerk Reaction, 57 Megaton, Bob City, Kettle, the Fur Traders and one band I forgot the name of. There was also a bit of nudity for all yer preferences. After the first band, the original soundman took off for fear of his equipment getting damaged. The only harm I saw done was the beating and molestation of a wicker cat and the partial ripping a large stage left "Pud" wall hanging. Oh well. JB Sound stepped up within about a half hour and finished the night with their on stage PA and mixing. I think the sound was actually a bit better. Oh, my tab came to just over $40.00, so be happy I remembered this much ...

ANDY KAUFMAN
This past week, there was a suspicious announcement regarding the host of Saturday Night Live for Saturday, December 11, 1999. It was announced as being hosted by either Jim Carrey or Danny DeVito (the musical guest is R.E.M). Both men have an interest in the upcoming Andy Kaufman biography movie Man In The Moon (Carrey plays Kaufman, Devito appears as himself and produced the film). The interesting thing, however, is that it was also announced that there will be a guest appearance by either "Andy Kaufman" and/or "Tony Clifton." Of course, Andy has "allegedly" been dead for years, and Tony Clifton was Andy's nasty lounge singer alter-ego. What gives? In any event, it should make for an interesting show.

KITTY JONES
A new local band by the name of Kitty Jones will be playing a show Thursday, December 9 at Bernie's, along with Five Deadly Venoms. Their (self-described) sound is akin to PJ Harvey meets Sinead O'Connor meets Concrete Blonde. They are an all-women band, but they guarantee that you will not hear the lonely folky wail of an acoustic guitar, nor the piercing punk shriek of an inaudible voice. Check 'em out!

I've been hearing rumors of Chelsie's closing or changing hands for various reasons for something like the last 5 years, so I kinda began ignoring it all. I guess with the closing being less than a week away this time, I should accept it as being true.

THE GIFTCD RELEASE PARTIES
This holiday season, several music-minded persons gathered together to create a holiday-related compact disc called The Gift, with the proceeds to benefit the Columbus Coalition for the Homeless. In addition to the CD (which features many local artists performing both original and classic holiday tunes), there will be several events held to promote the disc. The first such event begins this weekend, with two shows at Little Brother's, plus in-store events at Functional Furnishings and Magnolia Thunderpussy record store. Local legends of country rock, McGuffey Lane, have released (err, re-released?) their first album on CD. The First Album is a local and country classic that I'm sure a few of ya recall hearing on the radio somewheres 'round 20 years ago.

COLUMBUSMUSIC.COM SHOWCASE AT LITTLE BROTHER'S
This Saturday, November 27th, Columbusmusic.com will feature five bands who have been heavily downloaded from their site in a showcase at Little Brother's. The bands who will be appearing are: Adam Kontras, Switch, Vena Cava, Soul-Fu Villains, and Silo the Huskie. Doors will be at 8:00, admission is $5 and proceeds will go toward maintenance of the Web site.

Columbusmusic.com is a locally-based MP3 site that offers free downloads from some of Columbus' finest talents such as Scrawl, Watershed, Pretty Mighty Mighty, Templeton and many others. Some other features include easily searchable show listings, a streaming MP3 Shoutcast channel of all the songs on the site, and an increasingly popular message board focusing on the local music scene. GO ROBOT GO, THE VELVETEENS, AND SWITCH LIVE ON CABLE!
This Thursday night after all the turkey is gone and the football is over, check out Warner cable channel 21 for Melvin B. Strange's Out Of Order Television. Featured this week are local faves Go Robot, Go! @ Little Brother's, The Velveteens @ Bernie's, and Switch @ The North Berg Tavern. The show starts at 11:00 p.m. and runs until midnight for a whole hour of hometown rock & roll fun!

THE LEAGUE BOWLER'S 4TH ANNUAL THANKSGIVING-EVE BASH
On Wednesday, November 24th, Andyman's World-Famous Treehouse will host The League Bowler's 4th annual Thanksgiving-eve bash. The League Bowlers are Carl Rose, Jr. (Axl of G&R fame's destitute stepbrother), Jim Johnson (who gained fame as a Shadowlord in the 80's while making really good motorboat engines on the side), Joe "Jr." Johnson (Jim's 2nd half-cousin), and the amazing Paul Beltz (a man rumored to be stranger than fiction). It's been said that certain members of "The League Of Crafty Bowlers" bear more than a striking resemblance to members of the hometown, crack, power-pop trio Watershed, but I don't believe a word of what Colin and Joe have to say about it! I can't think of a better way to drink in the holidays! See ya' there ...

FAMILIAR FACES
(The) Lack, aka (The) Lack Fatal, is coming out of the practice closet. The band features the guitarist, bassist and drummer of Betaroric (who, I'm assured, are still together) plus a singer, a keyboardist, a keyboardist/drummer and a soundboard engineer. Hmm, 3 plus 1, 2, 3, 4 ... that's 7 members. They made their live debut on Halloween with more shows and studio recording sessions in the works.

I made it out to see Pop Quiz for the first time in awhile. There's an old familiar face on drums -- Bill the New Bomb Turks ex-drummer.

Switch's bassist has left the band to join Red Wanting Blue. I guess that leaves Switch wanting a bassist and a bassist wanting to switch. Sorry. There were too many bad puns to resist.

It looks like the rumored compilation of outtakes and unused tracks from various Burnt Sienna Records related bands and recording sessions over the last 7+ years is going to be released -- by the year's end yet! The Vent the Spew (Red Eye Records) comp will contain 25 tracks including the Econothugs, Clay, The Hairy Patt Band, Bob City, Granny's Hole, My White Bread Mom, Cheater Slicks, Staggers, Flyin' Saucers and many more. Hey Burnt Sienna/Red Eye ... my birthday and the holidays are coming up ... hint, hint, hint.

STREAMING DANCE
This last weekend the OSU Department of Dance featured Pulp, Christine Chen's and Michael Thomas' graduate dance concert. What's special about this is that the November 19 and 20 performances were available as live streaming QuickTime webcasts through http://www.dance.ohio-state.edu/. And if that weren't enough to gain my interests, the shows included live pre-show and in-show performances by Marcy and Sue of Scrawl and the music mixing of Ed Luna. It ended up being one of the strongest, dynamic and entertaining modern dance performances I've seen in years at OSU, Wexner or anywhere else -- and I've seen quite a few over the last ten years. Here's hoping they get some archived version of the show up on the Web site.

NEW BOMB TURKS UPDATE
Columbus' own New Bomb Turks are back in town after recording their new album at Ghetto Recorder Studios in Detroit. The band was able to lay down 17 tracks in about five days, including one instrumental and two covers ("Chip Away At The Stone" by Aerosmith and "Action" by The Knots). The band is currently mixing the album at Diamond Mine Studios in Columbus, and are toying around with several possible album titles, such as From Point A to Point Blank, Tickled Pink, and the front-runner The Weak Blame The Strong. The album, whatever it's called, will be out early next year on Epitaph.

RUDY GOOSE COMICS
Local comic book impresario Rock-a-billy Ken is hosting some rock'n'roll shows at his comic book store Rudy Goose. A big supporter of local music, Ken has offered his store as an intimate setting for the likes of The Pop Quiz, En Fuego, and even The Trash Brats (from Detroit). This Saturday at 7:00 PM, the joint hosts the rock'n'roll stylings of Pat Dull and his Media Whores. Rudy Goose Comics is located at 2165 N. High St., and can be reached at 299-9387.

DERAILLEUR RECORDS
Several bands on local label Derailleur Records are up for awards at The Greater Columbus Music Awards on Wednesday, November 10 at Little Brother's. That same morning, at 11:00am, The Velveteens will be on WCBE.

Two nights later, label-head Brad Liebling will be hosting a Derailleur Records Weekend at Little Brother's, celebrating a very successful year of releasing local music. Look for more on Derailleur in Thursday's Columbus Dispatch Weekender section. Here is the schedule for the fest:

Mushcup (from Pittsburgh) is finally releasing their long awaited debut.

This past week Tim Easton recorded his new 7" on Jackass Records with Sean Beal on slide guitar -- no release date yet. MOHIO is finishing up production of a new record. Jerk Water Jive finished production on their first CD. Fulbone and Stone Velvet have been in tracking for a full CD! Fulbone expects to be done in late November.

TRIGGAHAPPY CD RELEASE PARTY
Friday Nov. 5th at Little Brother's, Columbus' first "ska" band Triggahappy will be hosting their CD release party. There will be free cd's, t-shirts, & love to give away, plus opening act Fenster!

FIREXIT'S LAST SHOW
... in their existing space, that is. The Friday, November 5th show will feature some big names of noise and noisy techno. The DARKSTAR 7: ZHARK STAR RISING event will feature Emil Beaulieau (RRRecords founder Ron Lessard), Zipper Spy, and Ultraflash, and these are just the US names on the bill. The rest came all the way from the UK: Hecate (with the Zhark label), Christoph Fringeli (Praxis, Zhark), Ben Fear, and Walter Wright. AURAL INNOVATIONS ANNOUNCEMENTS
The latest edition of local spacerock / psych zine Aural Innovations (#8, October 1999) is ready. There are big changes starting this issue. First, in addition to the hard copy that you can purchase or subscribe to, there is also an Adobe Acrobat version available for FREE download. (You must have the Adobe Acrobat reader to view the mag in this format.) That too is free and both are available from the Aural Innovations web site. BETARORIC
The CD by Betaroric will be out by January, 2000, and features 13 songs clocking in at 50+ minutes. It was recorded at Workbook Studio in Nov 1998 and June 1999 by Jon Chinn and Neal Schmidt. A CD release party is tentative in January with local band Tiara maybe to coincide with their upcoming release on Anyway Records?), and others ...

JOEL POLL 2000
We're going back to our roots here. A few of you may remember that Cringe started as a "poll" of Live Shows calendar subscribers 5 years ago. Well, to celebrate our 5th year and the millennium Cringe presents Joel Poll 2000!

You may enter as many different nominees for each category as you like. We do ask that you only vote once for any particular nominee. (That means you can enter your favorite 5 bands, but you should not enter the same band 5 times.) Local refers to Columbus, Ohio, with an emphasis on the OSU and the Short North.

MEMORY LANE
McGuffey Lane will make a rare central Ohio appearance Thursday, November 4, 5pm - 8pm at the Buckeye Hall of Fame Cafe. Admission is 1 unwrapped brand new toy. Each paid admission receives a free $5 game card, free soft drinks, free appetizers and the music of McGuffey Lane.

NEW BASICS
The New Basics Brass Band band are excited to announce that their Christmas EP, Shake Christmas is finally in the can and will be available early next month. It features such Yuletide gems as "Let It Snow," "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town," "Little Drummer Boy," and "Sleigh Ride." It also includes the New Basics original, "Shake Christmas." Community Prints is a new screen printing company in Columbus, Ohio. They screen print everything from t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, etc., and also vinyl stickers. BUZZCOCKS
On Friday, October 29, 1999, the Alrosa Villa plays host for legendary pop-punk (read Green Day) originators, The Buzzcocks. Also, the Buzzcocks will be making an in-store appearance somewhere in Columbus, probably at either Magnolia's or Used Kids, maybe both!

TIARA
Tiara will be releasing a 7-inch single next month, and will be hosting a release show for it. The single will have one song from their forthcoming CD, due out in January, plus a b-side. And, it will be on white vinyl!

CLASH OF THE DAMNED BUZZCOCKS
Well, the next few weeks will see a plethora of "old school" punk gobbing all over Columbus. This Friday, October 22, 1999, the Alrosa Villa hosts the legendary Damned, of allegedly first-English-punk-single-and-album fame. Locals Martyr Colony and Them Wranch open. The following Friday, October 29, 1999, the Alrosa Villa again plays host for pop-punk (read Green Day) originators, The Buzzcocks. All self-respecting poseurs will be flying the colors. Also, supposedly the Buzzcocks will be making an in-store appearance somewhere in Columbus, probably at either Magnolia's or Used Kids, maybe both! Finally, The Clash is releasing a long-delayed live album, supposedly as early as this week. Entitled From Here To Eternity, the 16-track disc features selections throughout their career, from their club days right up to tunes from their opening slot for the Who's (first) farewell tour.

MUTANT POP FESTIVAL
On Saturday, October 23, 1999, Oregon-based Mutant Pop Records will be hosting a record label Festival at Bernie's/the Distillery. Bands from all over the country will be playing, including The Connie Dungs, Dirt Bike Annie, Ruth's Hat, The Hissy Fits, The Proms, and the Kung Fu Monkeys.

EMPERORS OF BAD LUCK
The Emperors Of Bad Luck have just recorded 6 new tracks at John Schwab Recording Studio with engineer Joe Viers. Andy Harrison (formerly Howlin' Maggie) played on all 6 songs. The band plans on releasing a 6-song cd with a few extra tracks (possibly a Ronald Koal cover) in mid- to late December. In addition, the band has 2 songs on a local site called Columbus Music.com. This week, their "13th Hour" was #12 on the most downloaded songs.

NEW FUNK-SUPERSTARS-ON-THE-HORIZON ALERT!
The Soul-Fu Villains, the artists formerly known as Burlap Sun, come to the next level of hip-hop/funk/soul-rock fusion with a new name and new line-up. Gone is singer D-SKITE, on-board is Los (drums/vox), Jinx (vox), Ian (percussion/vox), Scott (git), Bob (bass), Martin (trumpet), and K.G. (sax/vox).

OF MOVIES AND MUSIC
The Evolution Control Committee was on WRUW's "Press The Button" Sunday night. The Cleveland radio program is a lot like Negativland's radio show "Over The Edge." Mark G. of The ECC (and The Weird Love Makers) did a live performance with the other button pressers.

Mark's Cleveland appearance was in conjunction with the latest Columbus-based Avant Garage series. The growing series teams (local) musicians with cool old silent films. This current show will be at the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater on Saturday, October 23rd at 7pm. The playlist looks a bit like this:

Souled American, a legendary group that makes infrequent road trips, will be appearing at Larry's on Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999 @ 8 pm with The Ron House Band & Paul Nini (Log).

STEPFORD FIVE
The Stepford Five are currently recording their debut album, tentatively entitled Mesh, due out in January 2000. The band has begun the mix-down process at Workbook Studio here in Columbus.

MIGHTY RADIO
This message from CD101 was forwarded to me by Pretty Mighty Mighty. Rather than paraphrase, I thought I'd just be lazy and quote the whole thing:

WWCD 101.1 FM (CD101) is proud to announce that local Columbus band - Pretty Mighty Mighty - has officially been added to our current rotation. From their album Famous Past Lives on Derailleur Records, CD101 will be playing track three - "Ski Instructor" - in a medium rotation (10 to 15 times per week).

Pretty Mighty Mighty joins other local Columbus bands who have found their way onto the air in regular rotations. Bands like - Howlin' Maggie, Gaunt, Scrawl, Watershed, The Royal Crescent Mob, Tim Easton, New Bomb Turks, and Big Back Forty.

Well, aside from Willie Phoenix having shaved his head, Willienews had a few other tidbits to pass on ...

First, look for a story on Willie in the Columbus Alive any week now.

Second, David Anderle and Joe Chiccarelli both listed Willie's A&M album as a significant project in the recently published The Encyclopedia of Record Producers (err, something like that). But it seems the Library of Congress still lists that album as a reggae album rather than a rock album. Maybe his new dreadless appearance will convince someone to change it.

LET THE BYGONES BE
A new local band called The Bygones will be making their Bernie's debut on Saturday, October 9th. The band consists of Bill Wagner (of Guinea Worms fame) on guitars and vocals, Jason "not aka Post" Kiernan (of Preston Furman fame) on drums, and Dan Piercy (of Seldom Scene html fame) on bass. Also on the bill are Johnny Smoke (from Dayton) and the mighty Cash Money (from Chicago).

WEXNER WEB, PART X
Every once in a while my day job, Cringe and my longtime occasional work at Wexner all three converge together nearly as one. The outcome here is the first phase of the 10th Anniversary Wexner Center for the Arts Web site. The current exhibition pages (Julie Taymor), the performing arts "Countdown" pages and the two top intro pages are the parts included in this first phase. You can blame me for the html and coding. Look for phase 2 of the 10th Anniversary site in the coming months.

MUSIC AWARDS NOMINEES
Well, I just got a copy of all the final nominees for the Greater Columbus Local Music Awards. I know yer curious ... Hmm, let me see ... Am I allowed to share? There's no small print of that nature, so I guess so. Ready? And the nominees aaaaaarrrrrre ...

Yeah buddy, perty much every Cringe resident band and label is well represented -- and I don't think anyone from Cringe was even able/eligible to participate in last week's final nomination process. The winners will be announced at the awards show at Little Brother's on November 10.

DERAILLEUR RECORDS UPDATE
Bigfoot made a successful debut on CD101's Independent Playground on Sunday Sept. 19th. The band played three originals and a Bob Dylan cover. Bigfoot were also heard on WCBE this past Friday Sept. 24 at 11:00am, and held their the next night at Lil' Brother's.

Bob City, the newest Derailleur band, made their debut with their new singer last Friday at Little Brother's, when they open for Royal Trux. Work on their 7" is progressing nicely, and it should be available for release early next year.

Templeton is getting busy with out-of-town shows. Look for the band to be making major stops in Chicago and NYC soon.

PRETTY MIGHTY MIGHTY
Pretty Mighty Mighty played this past Monday at Bernie's with The Promise Ring, and by all accounts it was a fantastic show. A very enthusiastic crowd was out. The band features scene veterans John "Booger" Weills (ex-Action Family, Stupid Fuckin' Hippie & Barbed Wire Dolls) on vocals, Matt "Honky Kong" Campbell (ex-Knumbskull, Gasohol & Throat) on bass, Devo Damnright (current Whiteout) on lead guitar, John "Sammich" Rice (ex-Knumbskull & Gut Piston) on rhythm guitar, and last but not least, Jim "King Pabst Blue Rhythm" Stone (Bernie's Bartender Extrodanaire) on drums. I think I almost sold a couple Lovers on the name Back Stabbath ... maybe next round.

BREAK-UP! WEEKEND
Break-Up! Records will be hosting a two-day back-to-school festival on Friday, September 24, 1999, and Saturday, September 25, 1999. The Friday show will be held at Bernie's Distillery, and the Saturday show will be held at the High Five. Both nights will be hosted by Pat Dull and his Media Whores, who will open each show with a short set. Here are the line-ups, in reverse order of appearance:

TEMPLETON
Templeton has recorded a song for local Christmas music compilation The Gift, due out in a few months. The song is entitled "Christmas Crisis." Templeton will also be playing at the Derailleur Records Weekend at Little Brother's, on November 12, 1999.

NgiN
There's a new band being formed by Kevin Lee (formerly of Cringe - the band) called NgiN (pronounced "engine"). The line-up consists of:

Pink - vocals (formerly of C.L.S.D. and Beneath)
Kevin Lee - guitars (formerly of Cringe)
Matt Blair - guitars (formerly of Blame Lucy)
Chris Cox - bass (formerly 616 undone)

BIG AND LITTLE
Bigfoot celebrates the release of their second full length, Dark Old Days, September 25 at Little Brother's. This (along with Pretty Mighty Mighty's recent Famous Past Lives) may be one of the most and longest awaited local follow-ups I can recall. Well, at least fer me. Oh yeah, you can partially blame me for the CD layout and design too.

BACK IN TOWN
Well, it's been hard not to tell that this week OSU begins a new year of classes. The kids are back, and back in masses. In preparation, the first phase of the Cringe reorganization and redesign has been put up. There should be at least two more phases. One focusing on pertying it up a bit and another for added functionality. In the mean time, keep the comments, suggestions and criticisms coming. They really do help us.

DERAILLEUR RECORDS
Look for Derailleur to put out a Bob City 7" before the end of the year. Brad Swiniarski, the drummer for both Bigfoot and Bob City, is putting the finishing touches on a full-length solo CD that will also be released on Derailleur. There will also be a full-length Jive Turkey's CD out on Derailleur. Look for that CD to be released roughly this time next year.

The Bigfoot CD release show is September 25 at Little Brother's. Also performing will be Rory Shackleford, a new band consisting of Jeff Clowdus (formerly of Ugly Stick), Brad Swiniarski (Bigfoot, Bob City), Ed Mann (The Sovines, Gunshy Ministers), and Bill Heingartner (Heifer, Sonny and the Spheres). Preston Furman may also make an appearance.
