GO ROBOT GO UPDATE
It turns out that the on-air interview local band Go Robot, Go! did with WOXY was not for their "Local Lixx" program, as reported last week. Actually, it was for the station's Thursday morning "drive time" 97X artist spotlight. Also, it looks like the band will be in the top 5 most requested songs again this week.

STADDENS BRIDGE
Local band Staddens Bridge released a CD last month, which has been played on CD101, as well as KLOL in Houston. In fact, KLOL liked it enough to invite Staddens Bridge down to join the side stage acts at Fall Jamm 5 (which will feature the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Buckcherry, Collective Soul, and Smash Mouth on the main stage)

UNSTEADY GAIT
Todd Armstrong, Gait's "manager," tells us the band's fate is uncertain. Vocalist/guitarist Jason Campbell is moving on to a real job in that windy city I just saw Tom Waits in while drummer Jeremy Russell is honoring his vows. Vocalist/guitarist Bob White and bassist Scott Kidd plan to continue playing together. Whether or not they continue to use the name Gait has yet to be decided.

CUSACKS RECORD RELEASE PARTY
Local popsters The Cusacks are releasing 12 slices of pure pop bliss in the format of a new CD called Waxing The Scene, on their own Gwei-Lo Records label. The official release date is Tuesday, August 24, 1999, with a record release show on Wednesday, August 24, 1999 at Bernie's Distillery. 84 Nash and Peachbones will also be playing that night.

ANYWAY FEST
Anyway Records is hosting a label showcase this weekend, to be held at Little Brother's. On Friday, August 27, the show will feature The Ass Ponys,Moviola, Tiara, and Ray Mason. Saturday, August 28, has The Cheater Slicks, Wolverton Brothers, 84 Nash & The Indoorsmen (who hail from Athens).

DERAILLEUR RECORDS UPDATE
Local label Derailleur Records is releasing the Bigfoot CD in the campus area stores this week. Word is that they look and sound great! Derailleur is now being distributed nationally by Parasol Distribution (based in Chicago), in addition to Redeye Distribution.

STEPFORD FIVE
The Stepford Five are returning to Workbook Studios to continue recording it's debut album, still scheduled for a fall release. As always, check out their web site (http://www.stepfordfive.com/) for updates, reviews of shows, news, and some new sections in the near future!

GO ROBOT GO
According to the band, Cincinnati area fans have made Go Robot Go the number
two most requested outfit (for the single "See You On The Radio") last week on WOXY 97X in Oxford OH, culminating in an on-air interview on the regional show Local Lixx this Thursday at 8:30 pm. The band will also be playing at the CMJ New Music Marathon in NYC in September! Check out the info at http://gorobotgo.com/ for more details!

DIRT BIKE ANNIE RECORD RELEASE PARTY
This Saturday, August 21, 1999, Bernie's/The Distillery will host a record release party for Dirt Bike Annie, an excellent pop-punk band from New York City. They have recently released a seven-inch single (enthusiastically entitled Sitcoms And Summercamps!) on Columbus' own Break-Up! Records. The band will have singles on hand for sale, as well as a terrific new CD called Hit The Rock! (on Mutant Pop Records).

ANYWAY FEST UPDATE
Here's the latest scoop on the Anyway Records fest, to be held at Little Brother's on Friday, August 27, and Saturday, August 28, 1999. Friday will feature The Ass Ponys, Moviola, Tiara, and Ray Mason. Saturday has The Cheater Slicks, Wolverton Brothers, 84 Nash & The Indoorsmen (who hail from Athens). Unfortunately, the Compulsive Gamblers are playing Memphis that night, and so were unable to make it (as originally planned).

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN - THE FABULOUS STAINS
This Wednesday, August 18, 1999 at 7:00 PM, Ohio State University's Wexner Center features a rare screening of the cult rock'n'roll classic Ladies And Gentlemen - The Fabulous Stains. It's been years since I've seen it, but I remember that it features members of the Clash, the Sex Pistols, and the Slits. The story revolves around a female punk band that gets involved in all sorts of shenanigans.

TOO MUCH AT ONCE
On top of the 18 disks I just got from CD Now, Earwig released their long awaited (by a few of us at least) second full-length CD, Perfect Past Tense (Lizard Family Music). My Uncle Wayne just put out another 7", Beat Hits (Seldom Scene Records). Local label Vinyl Retentive (GG Allin, Tiny Tim, Antiseen) just release a 7" by Atlanta's The X-Impossibles. If all goes well, the new Bigfoot CD, Dark Old Days (Derailleur Records) should be out any day now.

ALIVE AWARDS
If ya haven't yet, you may wanna read Stephen Slaybaugh's article "Who's better who's best" in the current Columbus Alive. His somewhat jaded response to the Columbus Alive's own readers poll a few weeks back has a familiar ring to it -- Cringe was started largely in response to a similar poll held years ago. He drops the name of several of his picks for best local bands. I'm kinda proud to say that every non-defunct Columbus band that Cringe hosts made his "short" list. His list also represents every label we host and one or two bands that haven't quite finished their pages on Cringe. Yeah buddy!

I'm not sure if one spurned the other, but Columbus Alive is also putting together the Greater Columbus Local Music Awards. More on that as the November 10, 1999 awards show approaches.

ANYWAY FEST UPDATE
Local label Anyway Records has put out over 50 records for numerous local (and beyond) bands during its roughly seven years of existence. In celebration, the label is hosting a party at Little Brother's featuring some of the bands with which it has been affiliated over the years. Friday, August 27, 1999, will be featuring The Ass Ponys, Moviola, Tiara, and Ray Mason. The schedule for Saturday, August 28, 1999, is more up in the air, however. The Cheater Slicks are definitely playing, and label owner Bela Koe-Krompecher is trying to confirm the Compulsive Gamblers for the show. Look for more updates soon!

DERAILLEUR RECORDS
Speaking of local labels, Derailleur Records has a new web site up for your viewing pleasure. In addition, Templeton's Derailleur CD (Trash to Treasure) is now being distributed nationally by Redeye Distribution, and can be purchased online and delivered directly to your door from www.cdnow.com and www.amazon.com. Two other Derailleur releases, Pretty Mighty Mighty's Famous Past Lives and The Velveteens' Marveline, can also be purchased at these sites. In addition, be on the lookout for an upcoming Derailleur CD from Bigfoot, as well as a good chance of a CD release by The Jive Turkeys sometime early next year.

NEW BOMB TURKS UPDATE
Word on the street is that The New Bomb Turks will be playing at the Alrosa Villa on Friday, September 10, 1999, as part of their tour with The Supersuckers and the mighty Hellacopters.

REAL LULU UPDATE
Gregg Spence, founding member of Dayton band Real Lulu (Big Beef Records) has been diagnosed with cancer, and is currently undergoing treatment for the disease. Real Lulu is organizing a Gregg Spence Fund to help Gregg and his family offset the tremendous financial burdens. Gregg is a prominent figure in the Dayton music community.

Many people have been sending cards and donations to Gregg. Fundraising efforts are continuing, and for those of you interested in supporting Gregg during his time of need can send donations to The Gregg Spence Fund, Account #623319043, Bank One Deposit Dept., 100 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215. There are also videotapes available of a recent benefit show at 1470 West, featuring all of the bands who performed that evening, including The Altered Statesmen, Heike, Swearing At Motorists, and a lengthy segment of Real Lulu. Videos of the Gilly's benefit (with The Mulchmen, Shrug, Johnny Smoke and Rob The Bank) and Canal Street Tavern (with Nostromo, Sundrop, Big Marauder, The Mystery Addicts (featuring a special appearance by Ed Pittman, founding member of Toxic Reasons) and Let's Crash are also available. Each video runs close to 2 hours and is $8 ppd, payable to "Big Beef Productions". Ohio residents must add that annoying 6.5% sales tax. Again, send orders to the Big Beef address below.

DERAILLEUR UPDATES
Templeton returns to the stage on August 13 at Little Brother's when they open up for the Dave Grohl produced Birmingham, Al bred band known as Verbina. Harold "Happy" Chichester of RC Mob and Howlin' Maggie fame will be sitting in on bass for this show. Don't worry all of you Miss Honey Huff and Fuss fans. Emily will be back with the boys for the next show.

It appears that the inbred Derailleur family will increase by one in the relatively near future. Our lawyers have been having 'round-the-clock negotiations with the bartenders for The Jive Turkeys to see if some sort of mutually destructive relationship might be formed; and it appears that the talks are going well. Essentially, if the Turks don't get what they deserve, that is, someone who knows what they're doing, then it looks like there is a good chance that they will release a CD on Derailleur sometime early next year. I wish them well in their hunt for a real label.

KUNG FU MONKEYS
This Wednesday, July 28, 1999, Bernie's Distillery will be hosting the Columbus debut of the Kung Fu Monkeys, an awesome pop band from New York City. The band has at least four singles out currently, including two on the Oregon record label Mutant Pop. Recently, the band has released an import single (from Italy, I believe), which will be available at the show. Also playing that evening will be The Creature Comforts, Ice Cream Phoenix, and Go Evil Sheeki.

THE POPE AND LADY MONSTER
Circus of Cool's Lady Monster, aka Stephanie Booher, is moving off to Seattle, Washington. Stephanie stepped in to organize Circus of Cool events about a year ago. She continued to lead the Circus after the long illness and passing of the original ringmaster, Don "the Pope" Pavelcik. This Saturday's Circus of Cool at Dick's Den will server as a Bon Voyage party for Stephanie and a welcoming for the new Circus of Cool leader, Krista Williams.

CHEAP TRICK REPORT
This past Sunday, July 18, 1999, Cheap Trick played a free show outside the newly-opened Virgin Megastore, located at the new Easton shopping village. Promoting their new live CD (Music For Hangovers), the band played several cuts featured on that CD. After the show, the band did a little "meet and greet" with the fans, signing autographs and chatting with the local riff-raff. Before the end of the evening, each member of Cheap Trick became the proud owner of a copy of Gimme The Whores by Columbus' own Pat Dull and his Media Whores. Drummer Bun E. Carlos was heard to remark: "Is this any good?"

RECORD RELEASE PARTY
Local pop act The Marbles will be hosting a CD Release Party for their debut CD, called Rock's Not Dead (Break-Up! Records) on Friday, July 23, 1999. The CD has been garnering many favorable reviews, some going so far as to describe lead singer Amanda Eschbacher as "honey-throated." Also playing will be The Sovines and Superstar Rookie!

CHEAP TRICK REPORT
This Sunday, July 18, 1999, power pop legends Cheap Trick will be playing a free show at the newly-opened Virgin Megastore, located at the new Easton shopping village. Apparently the first in a series of shows, future acts currently scheduled are The Smithereens and Poole. The Lowdown has seen two conflicting reports regarding the show time for this Sunday: 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. The smart money sez get there early!

UPDATE - RECORD RELEASE PARTY
Last week, The Lowdown reported on The Marbles CD Release Party for their debut CD, called Rock's Not Dead (Break Up! Records). Unfortunately, due to internal wranglings, The Pop Quiz will be unable to play that show, but in their place The Sovines have graciously agreed to fill the bill. Superstar Rookie is still scheduled to play the Friday, July 23, 1999, show!

BLUES BENEFIT
The Columbus Blues Alliance is having a benefit show at Little Brother's on Friday, July 16 at 8:00 PM. Five of the area's top blues bands will perform at the show:

Big Al and the Capital City Players
Larry B. and the Real Deal
Night Train
Richey B. and the Redliners

A blues jam will be held from 1:00 AM until 2:00 AM.

Tuesday, July 6, 1999

JOHN WATERS
This Wednesday, July 7, 1999, the Wexner Center at Ohio State University will present a "director's cut" of the cult classic film Female Trouble, with a special appearance by the director himself, John Waters. Apparently, a few scenes that have been cut over the years (both upon its initial film release and the later video release) have been restored. Waters has stated that the cuts were made merely to shorten the film, not for censoring purposes. The film starts at 7:00 PM, but Waters will be at a book-signing table in the Wexner Center bookstore starting at 5:00 PM.

The message board and classified ads sections of Cringe have already been combined and upgraded. Now you have to register before posting messages and ads. Rest assured, you can hide your registration info from everyone but the Administrator (me). It also has some other nifty options:

I know I'll get some feedback on this -- particularly the registration requirements. This is actually the first part of the major site overhaul being done this summer. If you have any suggestions, complaints, ideas, input ... whatever, now's the time to get them to us. Hmm, why not post them to the general discussion area?

SCTV UPDATE
If you can recall last holiday season, NBC was feeling festive and decided to run repeats of the old Second City Television Network program in place of Later. For whatever reason, the network powers that be have once again deemed the public worthy of viewing the shows again. This week, from Monday June 28 through Thursday July 1, SCTV will again hit the airwaves. Time to fire up the VCR's!

POP QUIZ UPDATE
Local power pop trio The Pop Quiz is, for the time being, a duo, as drummer Bart Stoll has decided to take an extended leave from the band. Perhaps the fact that Bart lives in Lima, Ohio, requiring 1.5 hours of travel for practice had something to do with it...

WONDERING MAGNOLIAS
It looks like the Magnolia Thunderpussy move is complete. The new location is 1155 North High Street. That's between 4th and 5th Avenue and next to the new Clique night club (formerly Skankland). Be sure to check out Mag's growing online local music section too.

COMFEST REFLECTION
Concerning Comfest, a few of you have already pointed out that there was not much in the way of punk and the schedule resembled last year's. While I can't really argue with that IF ya only focus on the evenings and/or Main stage, there was still plenty to choose from and many new bands in the mix. Myself, I look forward to the opportunity to see so many different bands in one place and one weekend. Being someone who has put together several smaller events like this in the past, I've appreciated not having to deal with all the headaches involved in organizing such events. For a change, I got to be the patron, not the organizer. Remember, this is a Community volunteer run event -- one you could help plan and run. Not happy with the line-up? Join the planning committee for next year. If ya got the energy to complain, ya got the energy to do something about it.

I actually had a perty good Comfest. The Poplar St. Stage has become my favorite stage over the last couple of years. It seems to be the place for many of the Comfest newbies and other less established bands. Some are strong bands with great material that may not be Main stage drawing material quite yet. Others may just be on a rotation between Main stage and better time slots. Some memorable moments for me:

Long time favorites of mine, Pretty Mighty Mighty, played their first Comfest ever. For the record, I don't think PMM had ever applied to play before. I can finally say I've seen the Great Plains live, though I'm still not much of a fan. Bigfoot, who played the Main stage a few years back, turned in another powerful Comfest show - chills and tears. As if sharing my initials weren't enough, the Jive Turkeys improvised a lyric to include my name without missing a beat. Blue Level's set was a nice and impressive one reminding me a bit of Katell Keineg, Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones and Van Morrison with female vocals -- sax included. Cleopatra Grip's performance was a space-age spectacle with a sound not unlike later Siouxsie & The Banshees and Garbage; it looks like they're back together too. Tim Easton reunited with Kosher Spears' ol' washboard scrubber Joe for a good ol' hoedown. Though the bass player may possess the most annoying rock star persona in town (aka Howlin' Maggie's original bass player), Elliot 12trees played a confident and rhythmic set. Think Ani Difranco. Vince, the Burrito Bago guy, slid me a shot-o-whiskey when the wine wouldn't do.

NEW BOMB TURKS UPDATE
Columbus' own New Bomb Turks have a new drummer these days. Former drummer Bill Randt has been replaced (at least temporarily) by Sam Brown, who's busy schedule also includes drumming for The Deal and Gaunt. Word on the street is that the new lineup will debut at a July 4 downtown warehouse party this year, which will also feature Moviola, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, and several other bands. Further, a new 16-track collection of 7-inch b-sides, rarities, and "other swill" (called The Big Combo) will be available soon as an Australian import.

GREGG SPENCE FUND
Gregg Spence, a veteran of the Dayton music scene, has recently begun lengthy treatments for stomach cancer. Spence has made a name for himself performing and recording professionally for the past 15 years as a solo singer/songwriter and in a number of Dayton bands, including The Mulchmen, Cage, Real Lulu, The Killjoys, and The Underdogs.

In response, many members of Dayton's music and arts community have hosted live performance events aimed at raising money to help Spence and his family offset the financial burdens. All proceeds from these events will go to The Gregg Spence Fund. Persons wishing to contribute individually may make checks payable to "The Gregg Spence Fund" (Account Number #623319043), which can be deposited at any Bank One, or sent to Bank One, Deposit Department, 100 East Broad St., Columbus, Ohio, 43215.

RICK REPORT
Rick Springfield rocked the house at Mekka last Saturday June 12, 1999! Although I didn't get to meet him in person, the show itself was well worth the wait. Rick pleased the sold-out crowd by playing his entire string of 80s hits, from "Jesse's Girl" to "Love Somebody," plus his new single "It's Always Something." From the looks of it, everyone had a great time, and several overzealous female fans received a hug from Rick after awkwardly scrambling onto the stage! My God, I haven't seen that many brassieres flying though the air since the fire sale in the J.C. Penny's Lingerie department.

COMFEST UPDATE
The entire band schedules are up at the Comfest website, so check out when your favorite band is playing on which of the four separate stages! Headlining the Main (Bozo) stage this year are Watershed (Friday June 25th), The Johnson Bros. (Saturday June 26th), and The Haynes Boys (Sunday June 27th). Of special note, Scrawl (usually a headliner at the Main Stage) is playing an unplugged set at the Gazebo Stage at 6:50 on Saturday.

PIXIES AFIRE
After two failed attempts over the last few months, I finally made it to Firexit (470-0483, 1229 McKinley Ave.) for the Planet of Pixies Derailleur benefit show.

The space: A big open loading dock warehouse -- complete with open dock door for a little fresh air. I liked watching people walk through the huge inside garbage bag wall with a standard size doorway cut in it. It was kinda like one of them thar fake Wyle E. Coyote roads painted into a rock. As people passed through it a subtle surreal 2-D shift seemed to occur. Of course there were a few pieces of art in the 4-5 rooms ya walk by on the way to the stage area. The stage was substantial at 2-3 feet high in the near corner of the room, facing diagonally toward the open rear dock door of slight heat relief. It was actually perty comfortable in the space. Then again, I never found the need to use the bathroom and my thirst for beer (and other assorted alcohols) is never particularly strong -- it's kinda a dry space. However, free bottled water was available for a bit.

The show: Things began around 10pm. 3 hours later 11 bands had managed to play through 22 Pixies tunes and 11 originals. The first band, Val 2000, played no original since they were a makeshift band resembling Swivelarm Battlegrip with Pretty Mighty Mighty's drummer. The last band, Betaroric, played two originals at the request of the audience ... They are kinda one of Firexit's house bands.

The standouts: Templeton's "Debaser" was possibly the best Blank Frack vocal imitation of the night. Pretty Mighty Mighty mixed up their older original "Hangman" with a second guitar instead of violin. Preston Furman and The Bloody Matt Dillons were the most raucous performances. My Un-Kill Wayne fell dangerously off the stage. Ibn Kaldoon did the best Pixie-like dual vocal effect. Flipping Hades, the most Pixie-like band to begin with, lived up to it with the most animated rock star performance. Bigfoot, the least Pixie-like band, pulled off the Pixies more than adequately -- actually quite beautifully and memorably.

The end: I think this was the highest live bands per hour rate I have ever observed, and it all went perty smoothly -- without a hitch -- from my perspective. Of course, I later heard rumors of some Firexiters having a problem with the alcohol some bands had brought in. I kinda wondered about that myself. But also knowing several of the Firexiters have a desire to phase out "punk/rock" shows, it kinda left a slight bitter taste in my mouth. Why? I rather enjoyed the night and like the idea of a space that supposedly isn't afraid to mix it up with various genres and art forms. Here's to hoping I may some day see some decent punk, jazz, country, electronica, modern dance, performance art, modern art and more all in the same night and venue. It has been a few years; and I had ta put that one together myself.

COMFEST IS COMING!
Columbus' favorite three-day celebration of peace, love, and beer (The Community Fest) is all set to go, with many, many local acts playing throughout the weekend festival. Starting at noon on Friday, June 25, and ending around 10 PM on Sunday, June 27, everyone should be able to find some local music to tickle their collective fancies. Plus food, performance arts, crafts, poetry, and much, much more!

RICK ALERT
The still-hunky Rick Springfield will be at Mekka right here in Columbus this Saturday June 12, 1999! Word on the street is that fan club members get backstage to meet Rick in person!

LOCAL RADIO
We've been skimming KBUX's Top 30 chart somewhat regularly for a few months now. There actually has been some sort of local (Columbus or Ohio) band on the chart perty near every week for the last few months. What I don't think has been mentioned is that KBUX has a Local Music Show. Thursday night, 9-11pm KBUX brings us nothing but Ohio/Columbus music.

Not to be left out, CD101 has the Independent Playground on Sundays, 12m-2am (or is that Monday?). While it is not all local, it is indie and often contains many local acts.

That being said, Cringe will continue following the local music charting at KBUX and will add to that the local tunes played on the Independent Playground:

Sorry for the late postings. I was finally finishing up the hardcopy and had a power outage in the process. The (good?) news is that the first run of the 1998-99 hardcopy compilation of Cringe is done! Look for copies to mysteriously appear in various local music outlets this week.

BOB CITY
First they were. Then they weren't. Then they were again ... kinda. It looks like Bob City is loosing their singer to the big city opportunities of New York. Rather than the option of breaking-up, BC is looking at initiating a new vocalist.

OLDFIELDS UPDATE
Oldfields On High (located at 2590 N. High in Columbus) has a huge calendar of rock coming up this weekend. Friday, June 4 features the return of hometown heroes Howlin' Maggie to the local stage. The very next night (Saturday, June 5) showcases the legendary Blonde Bomber Ronnie Dawson, bringing his special brand of rockabilly riot to the club, Texas-style. Call (614) 784-0477 for more info.

RETURN OF THE HEARTDROPS
New York City's Heartdrops will be introducing their new CD to Columbus this Saturday, June 5, at Bernie's/The Distillery, along with local faves Flippin' Hades and The Deal. The new CD (entitled East Side Drive) is a rocking collection of new 'Drops toons, and will be available at the show.

WILL THEY OR WON'T THEY?
On Saturday, May 29, Pat Dull and his Media Whores are set to unleash their debut CD at a record release party at Bernie's/The Distillery. However, legend has it that there is a Columbus Curse which causes bands to not have their CD's completed in time for their record release shows. Will that fate befall PD&hMW's? Hopefully not. Entitled Gimme the Whores, the CD will eventually be available at finer records stores in town. In any event, The Whores will have the usual assortment of stickers, buttons, T-shirts, and candy available at the show at the record release show...and maybe the CD's! Playing with The Whores that night will be Watershed and The Pop Quiz!

BUGS BUNNY UBER ALLES
This Wednesday, May 26, at The Wexner Center (on OSU campus) presents a screening of Cartoons Go To War, a rare chance to see some of those old cartoons that they won't show on Saturday mornings anymore. See Hitler in a diaper while Daffy Duck kicks some fascist ass. Show starts at 7:00 PM.

JESSE'S RIB
The still-hunky Rick Springfield will be in Cleveland this Sunday, May 30, at the Great American Rib Cookout. 'Nuff said.

CRINGE (THE BAND)
Cringe (the band) has had a line-up change, and their new guitarist is Jae Terry (formerly of Regicide). Jae's first show with Cringe (the band) will be on Friday, June 11 at the Alrosa Villa. Also appearing that night will be Victim and Groundwar. Cringe (the band) will have their new 6-song demo CD (upside down/inside out) and new T-shirts available at the show!

SUPERSTAR SILO
Columbus' own Silo the Huskie, together with Superstar Rookie, are planning on releasing a split single, but with a twist. There'll be one new song from each band, as well as an additional song of each band covering one of the other band's songs. Hopefully, it'll be out by late summer on Half-life Records.

SPRINGFEST '99
Big day of rock at the Ohio State campus this Friday, May 21. From 4:00 PM until midnight, there will be two stages of continuous music! On one stage, located at Browning Amphitheater (near Mirror Lake) host Channel Z will introduce the following bands: Dangerman, Red Wanting Blue, Johnny Socko, O.A.R., Buzz Poets, Switch, and Ice Cream Phoenix. On the Ohio Union West Lawn (hosted by college radio station The Underground), you'll find Guided By Voices, Jimmy Eat World, Rainer Maria, Universal Dialect, The Gathering, The Revelers, and 84 Nash. There will also be dj's, breakin', and more, as well as after-hours parties. A carnival style midway will be featured on the South Oval, with inflatable games including Velcro Wall, Sumo Wrestling, food vendors and much more. EMPERORS OF BAD LUCK
The Emperors Of Bad Luck have had another line-up change recently, with their 2nd guitarist Jack moving to North Carolina last month. In his stead, Columbus music veteran Mick Divens has joined the band. They will debut the new line-up (as well as some brand new material) on Saturday, June 19th at Ruby Tuesdays.

OUR FLESH PARTY
Our Flesh Party is currently recording a follow up to their debut CD (Manifest Destiny) at Workbook Studio with Mr. Jon Chinn. The release is tentatively titled Eternal Flamethrower, and may (or may not) contain the songs "Spliny," "Fluffer," "7734," "Clean Liver," "Spaz," and others. On May 22, OFP will be packing up the van for Detroit rock city to play the Screwed, Blued, and Tattooed festival at the Magic Stick, featuring Tattoo folk (Columbus' own Atomizer of 8-ball Tattoo is a featured artist), sex folk (the screwed part), and headlining the musical portion of the day will be the Amazing Crowns (they're like, signed or something). OFP will play at about 7:45 PM if all goes as planned.

On Saturday, May 22, 1999, Templeton introduces their debut CD (Trash To Treasure) to the world at Little Brother's. Also performing will be most of the Derailleur Records family, including The Velveteens, Pretty Mighty Mighty, and Dave and Melanie of Bigfoot.

Rawk Chick brought a couple things to our attention ... First, Martyr Colony is playing with Motorhead, Jello Biafra, Marky Ramone and many more at the Expo of the Extreme 99 at Chicago's Riviera Theatre, May 21-22.

Also, the German title of the new New Bomb Turks release mentioned last week does not actually translate to The Weak Blame the Strong. According to Torsten, Cringe's German correspondent, Beruhren Meiner Affe actually translates to Me Touch Monkey. And from what Ms. Chick tells us, the title is about as close to the phrase Spank the Monkey the Turks could find in German ...

Romophos is a sophomore honorary at Ohio State that selects its members each year based on academics, leadership, and service. This year, they are holding the first annual Romophos Battle of the Bands to raise money for the VH-1 Save the Music Foundation and to give Campus bands a chance to compete.

FIRST UNIVERSAL SHOW
Universal is a new collaboration which is just plain interested in making some interesting events in terms of music, art, and culture. In their words, "Universal is an attempt to offer a venue for the venueless. We would like to see a collaborative community of people spring up to make an event happen which will have anything, including but limited to music, DJs, dancers, poets/spoken word, photographers, graphic arts, and more. We believe that there is an untapped river of people with a lot to offer, and we'd like to offer a space, both geographical and social, for people to present, construct, and participate.

We're not just looking for musicians and dancers and so on: to make something like this work, we also need people willing to do supportive work: getting flyers made and posted, helping coordinate the show, and (of course) watching the show. If you can be a supporter in some way, we encourage you to drop in for our upcoming meetings."

The Evolution Control Committee has been serenading Columbus with the unusual sound collages off and on for 12 years now, but hasn't performed in Columbus for quite a while.

Bath is dropping in from Cleveland to play us their dark songs of unusuality. Bath features one member of Columbus' seminal Body Release, a techno band that went on to spawn some of the best-known names (mainly Titonton, Monochrome, and Todd Sines) in our currently thriving techno scene.

Mary-Margaret Faith, Pantshead and Lunar (Ed Luna) will be spinning in as DJs and photowork by Jay Mueller will also be on display.

A quick peak at 4/19 playlist chart for The Underground (Ohio State University's college radio station) indicates a healthy streak of local musicians vying for valuable airtime, including 84 Nash's oft-times brilliant Band For Hire (on the Rockathon label) at the very top spot. The Revelers clock in at #13 with their second SpinArt recording, day in day out, and Flipping Hades break the top 30 with The Good Sense To Be Shattered (Seldom Scene) at #26. The real action takes place in the top adds for the week, with the top three slots going to locals Tim Easton (Help Me Find My Space Girl ep, Heathen Records), local label Burnt Sienna's Fric System II compilation seven-incher (featuring The Staggers, Spider Frendz, A Planet For Texas, and The Whiteouts), and Moviola's the Durable Dream (Spirit of Orr Records).

TV MUSIC FOR FILM
Some of you are probably familiar with the Avant Garage shows combining local musicians providing a live soundtrack to live screenings of vintage silent films. The man behind these events, Tim Lanza, is working on another similar but larger scale project. This one brings in Tom Verlaine of Television to score the soundtrack to seven short avant garde films from the 1920's-'40's. The show will be touring the US and possibly Europe and Japan later this year. So ya can mark yer calendars now, the only Ohio show is at the Wexner Center on November 20. Look for more info as the show dates draw nearer. Oh, and if you have press or venue connections, Tim is looking for further help and suggestions.

FIREXIT 9
On Friday, April 30th, 13 installation artists from the Cranbrook Academy in Detroit, Michigan will be featured at Firexit 9, the latest in the collective's series of indie multimedia "events." The gallery opening is also set to include local works of varied mediums, more graffiti, and a screening of the documentary film Dan by Cory Piehowicz. Music will be played by The Aasee Lake (Louisville), Tiara, DJ Kevy Kev, The Ele_mental soundsystem, and a freeform experimental set with Active Not Passive. BURNT SIENNA RECORDS
Be sure to check out the record release party for Burnt Sienna Records this Friday, April 23, 1999, when they release the second in the series of Fric System 7-inch compilation single. While at the show, ask label owner Tony Painter what the heck Fric System means. RECORD RELEASE SHOW
Cleveland's greatest living band The Revelers are coming to Bernie's Distillery in Columbus on Thursday, April 15, 1999, to kick off a tour for the release of their latest CD (entitled Day In Day Out). The new full-length CD is their second for the SpinArt label, and their fifth long-player overall. Also playing the show will be Pat Dull and his Media Whores, who's CD will be available within the month.

GOTHIC ROCK SHOW
Hey all you spooky kids! The High Five (corner of High Street and 5th Avenue) bar will be hosting several spooky goth shows in the coming months, thanks to the efforts of new booker Arturo DeLéon. This Saturday features the Cramps-like stylings of the sinister Cult Of The Psychic Fetus together with the industrial hammering of Martyr Colony. Be there or beware!

UPCOMING LOCAL RELEASES
The new full-length CD from Columbus' own Pretty Mighty Mighty, called Famous Past Lives, is officially finished. The CD's, expected to be in hand sometime in the beginning of April, can be purchased for $10 postage paid from Derailleur Records, PO Box 10276, Columbus, OH 43201. (make checks out to Brad Liebling), or you can bug your local record store to carry it. A big CD release party will be held on Saturday May 8 at Little Brother's. On the bill is Tiara and Bigfoot, with special guest Lizard McGee.

The Sovines will release their first CD, cleverly entitled The Sovines, in April on Kingpin Records outta Chicago. A release party will be held Friday, May 14, at Little Brother's. Other bands to be announced, but Gunshy Ministers will probably be opening, and maybe One Riot One Ranger.

Pat Dull and his Media Whores will celebrate the release of their debut CD at a record release party on Saturday, May 29, at Bernie's Distillery. Also playing at the show will be Watershed and The Pop Quiz. The CD, called Gimme the Whores, features 12 tracks the Whores recorded while holed up in Diamond Mine Studios.

DATES TO LIVE BY
The deadline for submitting local music info to the Columbus Alive/CD 101 Local Music Guide is April 9, 1999. Don't ignore this chance for exposure (um, note to self - send in Cringe info).

Amnesty International is hosting a show featuring Jerk Water Jive, McFlurry and Triggahappy at Bernie's Distillery on Saturday, April 10.

Acme Art Co. is having a benefit at Little Brother's on Sunday, April 11.

The deadline for the next issue of Cringe is set at April 15. Get yer submissions and info in. We're also starting to put together the 1999 Fests Calendar. If you have info on any local music related outdoor events, festivals, fairs or gatherings over the next few months, get them to Cringe anyway ya can.

Gus from Little Brother's dropped Cringe a note to let us know that this years' Comfest Web page is up at http://www.comfest.com/. This year Comfest is June 25-27, 1999.

MORPHING BANDS
It looks like Howlin' Maggie is back ... with a few changes. Carlton, once an RC Mobster with lead Howler Happy, is rumored to be the new drummer. I'm not supposed to reveal who the new bassist is, but at least for a show or two, it looks like it's going to be someone from a Cringe Resident band.

Don't ask me to recall everyone in the band and their pedigrees - in fact, it may just be a two piece - but Jason of Preston Furman and Post of I Have Mass have a new thing called Grafton. They debut Wednesday, April 7 at Bernie's Distillery.

FOLLOW-UPS
Tiara, about to travel out to Austin, TX for a show, has let it slip that their next CD will be on the local Anyway Records label.

Haynes Boys leader Tim Easton is taking another big step on his solo path. The folk, blues and roots guitarist/singer has signed on with EMI Publishing and is about to release another CD. This Help Me Find My Space Girl CD is a bit of an odd format. The first 3 tunes are from his recently released Special 20 CD. The following 9 "hidden" tracks, subtitled Clare EP, feature Tim playing around and experimenting in the studio between sessions. Though intended primarily for radio/promotional purposes, we probably will find a few copies locally. Oh, yours truly did the layout and some of the artwork for the release.
