Columbus Label Makes National Splash
Grandma Katherine's Music
Lots of happenings lately at Grandma Katherine's Music, one of Columbus' newest labels. With their fifth release hitting the streets in early April, GK artists and albums are being heard all over.
First, from Yankee Celtic Consort, the album Wander The Wood is being played on dozens of stations around the US and Canada. Radio programmers really have taken a liking to their blend of traditional Celtic and bluegrass. Strong reviews from Celtic Heritage and The Atlanta Celtic Quarterly have contributed as well.
Next, John Morgan's acoustic guitar album The Journey has gotten a lot of airplay on John Diliberto's program Echoes on Public Radio International. The album has also received solid reviews from Fingerstyle Guitar magazine and one is coming next week from New Age Voice.
Fred Haring has made some significant waves in college and Christian radio with his album Ghosttowns and Kingdoms. The first single release, "Wear White To My Funeral" is still in the Top 30 on two national charts (The Pure Rock Report and Jamsline), and stations have already begun to play the second single, "Hey Joe Carter", which addresses racism and economic inequality. The song is addressed to the father of a boy who Fred tutors in an after-school intervention program based here in town. Also, Fred is up for an Indie award for Best Short Form Video (among the other 4 nominees ... Ani DiFranco)
Chuck Brown's album Unadorned has done quite well on New Age and Smooth Jazz stations around the country, and is receiving heavy airplay on two satellite-delivered digital music services, DMX Music and Music Choice (heard locally on Time Warner systems). Unadorned is ranked #18 on Music Choice's New Age Channel at present.
The label has also cemented national mainstream distribution deals and will be available in stores around the country beginning in April. Their website traffic has doubled in the past 3 months, due in part to their new Online Jukebox, which allows the listener to hear full-length cuts from their artists. The label's next release comes in April with The Big Love! from The Grace Project. The Contemporary Christian project album was recorded at Fifth Avenue Studios in Grandview, and features all local talent, including work from such Columbus musical luminaries as Throat Culture, Donna Mogavero, Kim Rattan, Howlin' Maggie's Andy Harrison, Phil Maneri, Sam Hooff, Molly Pauken, Dave Absalom, Kevin Oliver, Jerry Loos, Dave "D. Skite" Schuiteman, Cynthia Hale and Noelle McClelland. Grandma Katherine's Music is a division of The Horizons Companies of Columbus, a film/video/audio/web-authoring/CD-ROM development entity. The label's website is at: www.gkmusic.com.
