TJ Slave Apartments and Park
Philip Park, best known as the electric guitarist fer the Haynes Boys and the guy from Aardvark Video, has stepped in as the bassist for Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments. Meanwhile their former bassist's, Craig "Big Daddy" Dunson, plans to move to New York and possibly team up with some of his Codename: Stingray ex-cohorts are in limbo.

The Econothugs are planning a reunion show for January 31, 1998 -- New Year's in January. I'm told it will be "all original members." I'm still awaiting word on whether or not that means the original vocalist, Jake Label (Jake Houch?, now of Moviola) and original drummer, Humpy "Funky" Wheeler (Geoff Ortlip, now of Miss May 66).

Gaseous Swan
The guys from Gasohol are still at it with a new bassist, drummer and name -- Swan Dive. Don't get too excited though. They don't plan to make their first appearance until April 1998.

The guys from Knumskull have done a bit more member shifting. Only this time there's a name change to along with it -- Knumnuts.

Super Group, err Rhythm Section
Speaking of ex-Thugs, drummer Geoff Ortlip? is working with bassist Jeff Plavcan (Wishyfish, Mary Adam 12, etc.). Last I heard, they were still searching for guitar and, I assume, vocals.

World Wider Pastures
Just as we thought Moo was joining the Guardian by going out to pasture, it seems to be setting itself up as an e-zine -- no more hardcopies. Hmm, a little friendly competition? In any case, we gotta get these redesigns and reorganizations moooovin'.

Up-Staged
Mekka recently announced plans for a real stage. This comes on the heals of a few Mekkans opening their own club, the Red Zone. Related? Dunno.

Wasabi on Dublin
Somewhere between the hominess of the Neil House and the Legion of Doom and the converted warehouse of Mekka and raves is Wasabi. The spot has already become a stop for Bikini Kill, Tsunami and numerous other indies common to the home touring circuit. Oh, the vitals: Wasabi / 401 Dublin Ave. / Columbus, OH / (614) 297-6669.

South of the Border Street Scene
Not so long ago, the Street Scene closed its doors. Several weeks later it opened with new ownership and perty much the same format (so I'm told). A few weeks after that it closed again. Rumor is it is being converted to some type of Mexican restaurant. Will there be music? Dunno.

New Skanklandlord
Skankland changed hands recently. With a bit of re-remodeling, the club has retained both the food and music, but deviating a bit more from the ska vein. Recent ads also seem to be playing up the food and "dinner club" appeals. I keep meaning to eat their, really!

Roots Playhouse
A new shop has opened at Fifth and High -- Monkey's Garden Variety Playhouse. Aside from more reggae related recordings and paraphernalia than I'll ever know about, they feature movie posters, clothes and Michelle Ishida's (Wishyfish, Mary Adam 12) handmade hats. High Five
Staying in the same neighborhood, a few months ago a new club opened near Fifth and High, called, ya guessed it, High Five. The once Chinese Restaurant next to a vacant bank and across from the Shell station has music several nights of the week. It seems to fairly open to anything in the realm or pop, rock or alternative.

Underground Over
It looks like Barley's has stopped with the Underground shows. The few shows they've had over the last several months have been for special ocassions and holidays. Most of those were held upstairs, not Underground.

Go West Used Kids
Used Kids is expanding by opening a new store in, you'll never guess, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Columbus will lose Used Kids Jerry DeCicca and Anna (of Bonifay) in the move.

Pretty Mighty Mighty has a CD's worth of material to go. First, they're shopping around a couple demos looking fer someone to release it Rumor is Interscope has shown a strong interest.

Bigfoot Kudos
If ya watch VH1 or maybe even MTV, ya might actually hear a little Bigfoot. They have a song or two deep in the background of a Kudos commercial. Oh, they made the connection through the NJ/NY band Ditchcroaker.

Local Playground
A few weeks ago I heard this tune that sounded strangely familiar, maybe even local, on TV -- but I couldn't quite place it. A day or two later I heard it again and saw the name, Marcy Playground. Now I remembered. The fact that MP is not local threw me. However, that same "Sex and Candy" song was on a 1996 compilation put out by the local Kathode Ray Music.
