CRINGE 5.2 ("The Cute Bass Player Issue") is the second poll taken of LIVE
SHOWS list (LS)* subscribers and related Columbus/OSU area Newsgroup readers.
The first poll (CRINGE 5.1 - "The Joel Poll") was released in January 1995 with
a slightly revised reissue in February 1995.

* LS is an e-mail based calendar of music related shows and events, started in
1990 to promote the OSU Experimental Series (some alternative music shaws at
the Ohio Union). LS now includes most of the mainstay OSU/Short North area
venues. The list currently has over 150 direct subscribers and an indetermin-
able number of newsgroup and redistribution readers. LS is published twice a
week and is available via osu.general, osu.music, osu.events, cmh.general,
gcfreenet.arts.music, and direct e-mail subscription. To subscribe to LS, send

"HOW/WHERE DO I GET A COPY?" Send e-mail to [email protected]
with the Subject SEND for the current CRINGE. It will also be posted to LS*,
osu.music, cmh.general, and gcfreenet.arts.music. For those of you not online,
look for it at select OSU area music stores, or just ask me for one. (NOTE:
hardcopies may be very limited - this is an Internet-based thing.)
"HOW DO I SUBMIT SOMETHING?" Send it to [email protected]
"WHEN'S THE NEXT CRINGE?" "ARE YA GONNA CALL THE NEXT ONE 'CRINGE'?" "ARE YA
GONNA HAVE MORE STORIES?" "ARE YA GONNA HAVE PICTURES?" The answers are
within, but just so ya know... CRINGE 5.2 was released in April 1995 with an
"irrelevant" story and a few scanned photos (in the hardcopy version). As for
CRINGE 5.3, if all goes well, the next issue should be out in July, 1995.
Thus, the DEADLINE for submissions is Friday, June 30, 1995.
"WHY DIDN'T YOU INCLUDE ... ?" With this second issue the main attempt is to
fill in a lot of the blanks from the first issue.
"WHAT'S THE THEME OF THE NEXT ONE?" E-mail from a Dogrocket fan (and member?!)
kinda sparked this. Several responses to my not liking "the Dog" mentioned
"the cute bass player." This and the wellspring of cute and/or female bass
players prompted the theme. The next CRINGE (5.3) will have a local releases
theme, containing a catalog of local band and label releases.

Dear Joel,
I'm writing in response to your review of Dogrocket in February. I don't see
what you don't like about these guys. These guys don't sound anything like
Greenday (sic). Maybe you should open your mind to music done by Bob Mould,
Sugar and Husker Du. I think their pop-side comes from their obvious Cheap
Trick influence. These are the bands that I could readily compare to
Dogrocket. I think there's a lot of talk about this band because they write
really great punk/pop songs.
You obviously weren't at the First Annual Cheap Trick-a-Thon. It was one of the
best events of the year. I want it to become an annual thing. 12 bands
playing Cheap Trick songs - all your favorites - with Marcy from Scrawl
hosting. You didn't hear anything about that on January 5, 1995. Dogrocket
came out on stage dressed as the Dream Police. It blew me away. It was
incredible ...
In response to the local record store connection. Have you ever met these
guys? Arturo DeLeon met these guys after one of the first shows we attended.
We loved them so much that we all started talking about what a great band they
were. To clarify your misconseption (sic), Artie did not know any of these
guys before he saw them play.
I think the Cheap Trick-a-Thon should be in the issue under events. It was an

Joel's Note: I replied to goodwin.1, whose name bares a striking resemblance
to that of the drummer for Dogrocket, and gave him some personalized info on
how to submit to the next Cringe. Aside from his original letter, he didn't.
And just for the record, I kinda think Green Day sounds like Cheap Trick (seems
to me someone else thought the same thing in a recent issue of Moo). I listed
the Cheap Trick-a-Thon in the Live Shows calendar; so, yes, I was aware of it.
In fact, I was at the table when Moody Jackson was asked to play it. Instead,
I went to Moody J's show with the Revelers (Cleveland) at Bernie's that night.
I still got a shot of CT from Moody J and Pat Dull as I recall. Is there no
escape? I just ain't a big CT fan. Maybe that's why "the Dog" don't do much
for me! Husker what? Actually, I cover 3 songs live: a traditional Celtic
piece, a Van Morrison tune and Bob Mould's "The Last Night." Oh, and a lot of
"the Dog's" fans do seem to work with or for record stores.

Just wanted to drop a line and tell you I really enjoyed reading CRINGE. I
only wish I could have read something like this when I first got to Columbus (a
year and a half ago), and not when I was on my way out (in June probably).

GREENHORN is reuniting for a couple Stache's shows on April 22 and May 13.
When asked what brought this on, drummer Pat laughingly said, "Money."
Moons ago GIRLY MACHINE got a new bassist - Bill. Now it seems Bill has carpal
tunnel problems, so both GM and his other band, NUDE, may be out of service for
awhile.
The KOSHER SPEARS (Joel's favorite acoustic folk/roots/blues/country act) have
broken up. It seems not all the Spears are Kosher with each other anymore.
Even Bernie's stopped givin' out pickles with every plate. What gives?
BUMBLE FLEA has been working with new vocalist Shannon Smith (formerly of
Throat). They could be ready any day now.
GASOHOL has a new young vocalist who used to be with Loss of Will I believe.
They should be ready come May.
NORM BEEKER, the Program Director for WCBE, is moving on - to Italy I hear!
On the heals of KARMA closing shop, DISCOUNT RECORDS closed its OSU location.
Meanwhile Johnny Go's HOUSE-O-MUSIC (High @ 16th) went ... a few doors North.
Speaking of closing, it seems neighbors, landlords and police are oppressing
the people at the NEILHOUSE and MAGNETIC PLANET. Both alternatives to the
standard live clubs and bars have been asked to stop or cut back on the shows.
