DRUM DAZE 2001
Columbus Percussion is hosting Drum Daze 2001 March 18 at the Capital Theatre in the Riffe Center.

This year's featured performers are Karl Perazzo and Paul Rekow (Santana), Terri Lyne Carrington (Herbie Hancock), Zoro (session drummer), Mike Mangini (Steve Vai and Extreme) and Jeff Hamilton (jazz drummer).

SILO THE HUSKIE AT SXSW
Silo the Huskie is going to Austin to play two shows at the South by Southwest Music Conference. Tell your friends: March 15 at the Cargo Records showcase at the Blind Pig (8pm), March 16 at Cargo Record's early showcase at the Green Mesquite (2pm).

F**bomb will be playing a benefit for the National Organization of Women March 16 at Capital University. The show is a celebration of women's history month. No word yet on whether F**bomb will appear as women for the concert. The show starts at 10pm

WHITE OUTS RELEASED, VINTAGE BOB CITY REUNITE
Well, maybe I spoke too soon. Bob City isn't quite done yet. They're having a reunion show of sorts with the old singer, Jeremy. Jeremy lives in New York these days. The show itself is to help celebrate the release of a bunch of previously unreleased White Outs tunes on Red Hour Recordings. A Planet for texas is also on the bill.

Yeah, Bob and the White Outs share a bass player. Yeah, Red Hour has also released some "vintage Jeremy" Bob City. And Yeah, APFT shares a split 7" with Bob City. So it all ties together nicely. As for the future of Bob beyond this March 17 show at High Five ... it's still in the air. At least expect some membership changes.

EARSHOT MOVED TO SOME OTHER DAY
I'm a bit busy with other stuff this week, so sorry if this is a bit weird ... My laziness now is fixing my procrastination of earlier. Earshot is being moved to its own page, separate from the Lowdown. Look for it later this week.

WHO'S GOT THE LOWDOWN NOW?
This is Chad's last Lowdown. But we ain't gettin' rid of him that easy. He's already got a couple stories/interviews in the works. As I think I mentioned previously, Pat Dull will be returning. Aside from the Lowdown being Pat's idea to begin with, he's now settled in to his new home and online access. There were a couple others potentially interested in helping out with the Lowdown, so maybe we'll see some new names too.

764-HERO AT BERNIE'S
Seattle's 764-Hero (greatly named after the toll line for turning in carpool lane violators) is playing Bernie's March 12. Kingsbury Manx and the Emerald Down are also taking the stage.

Doors are at 7pm, show starts at 10pm. The show is $7 and all ages.

EARWIG UPDATE
Lizard McGee won best song in the Alternative Category in Get Fancy Magazine. In other news, Earwig is gearing up for the long-awaited CD version of the live Bored in Chicago album.

THE UNDERGROUND TAKEN OFF THE AIRWAVES
You may have read about this in the Lantern or Columbus Alive. I don't necessarily have any further information, but thought I should at least pass it on. The Underground, OSUs student run radio station, has been taken off the air. The station still broadcasts via the Web and Campus cable. But the station was deemed too powerful by the FCC and its guidelines for unlicensed FM.

There are some discussions taking place with local/OSU radio supporters past and present. See the site or email for more info on the discussion list.

I've also started a thread for this on the Cringe message board. Have at it.

THE ROCK-N-ROLLING PIN
High Five is hosting the Rock-N-Rolling Pin 10pm February 28. The event will combine a rock show with a bake-off. Each band will prepare either a cooked or baked food item. The audience will be asked to try every item - the food is free - and during the show a vote by applause will be taken to determine the crowd's favorite food item.

F**Bomb, Walnut Brothers, Spurning, Roscoe, Dive and Plaid Frog will perform.

The show is a benefit for the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. For more information, email Nick Turkas at [email protected].

BIG ROCK SHOW II
The Otterbein High Risk Drinking Prevention Coalition is hosting The Big Rock Show II 11am-11pm May 5 at the Campus Center on Otterbein College.

Cringe, the Stepford Five, Myopia, the Big Creak, Stonevelvet, Scott Gorsuch, the Velveteens, 79 Grove, Kopaz, No Tagbacks, Poophouse Reilly, Those Darn Amigos, the MoonDance Experiment and Uncle Owen are scheduled to perform.

The show benefits Direction for Youth.

LAUREN HOSPITAL AND LAST DAY PARADE SPLIT 7"

COMFEST LOGO CONTEST
It's that time of the year again. The Community Festival is holding a design contest for the ComFest logo. The logo must be one-color and have the following elements: June 22, 23 and 24, 2001; Community Festival; Goodale Park; and the Hopewell sign. Mention of Columbus, Ohio, 30th year, or caption a plus.

Interested artists should being their logo to the 7:30 pm, March 6 meeting. The ComFest meetings take place at Roy G. Biv Gallery, 997 N High St.

LYLO AMERICANS CD RELEASE PARTY
The Lylo Americans are hosting a CD release party February 24 at Bernie's. The new album is called Fireflow.

EARSHOT: SILO THE HUSKIE TO PLAY SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST
I got a couple alternate suggestions for what to call this Earshot A/V section in the works: Joel's A/V Baby and Digital Leftovers. Either strike a chord?

Silo the Huskie (pictured) will be playing the Cargo Records showcase at South By Southwest in Austin, Tx on Friday, March 16. Silo will play a few shows on the way there. Come April the band will be preping new tunes for their second record on Cargo. With the planned fall release date the band will most likely be out on the road again.

VH-1 BANDS ON THE RUN
VH-1 is actively searching Columbus for contenders for the next round of "Bands on the Run." The organizers of the "Survivor-for-bands" show have contacted me and evidently several other locals in search of bands. They have shown a stong interest in at least Blatant Finger and Bob City. Just when all you pessimist thought none of the biggies checked out Colubus music ...

GROWING PAINS AND ON THE GO
Well, the first signs of Cringe growing pains showed up Monday. The log file tracking all access to the site got so big that it cut off some site resources. This basically resulted in the databases behind the Message Board and the Ads being inaccessible. On the good side, at some level it means the new server, message board and ads are generating a lot more traffic and hits.

We should have an official AvantGo channel for some of the more timely and popular parts of Cringe quite soon. That means any of you geeks with a PDA (Palm, Handspring, etc.) and the AvantGo software will be able to take parts of Cringe with you. It should also result in a bit more traffic from the placement we'll get on AvantGo's site.

DOG-A-THON BENEFIT
Little Brother's is hosting the Dog-A-Thon benefit for the Columbus Dog Connection February 18.

The show features Jack Neat, the Mendelsonics, HensleySturgis, the Fallow Valley Sinners, Ray Fuller, the Wahoos, Anna Paolucci, Vena Cava and the Kingrods, plus master of ceremonies Ned Wreckman and his dog Aberdeen. Tickets are $5.

Columbus Dog Connection is a non-profit volunteer organization which takes dogs who are strays, abused, on death row at animal shelters or were orphaned when their owner passed away and works to find new homes for them. The dogs stay with temporary foster families until permanent homes can be found. CDC has placed over 500 dogs since their founding in July of 1998.

LET IT RIP PRODUCTIONS
Let it Rip Productions is a Columbus-based promotional company best known for its Mofo Freakin' Rock Shows. The basis of the company is to find sponsors for shows to help with promotion - which adds more people coming out to the shows, who in turn might shop at the sponsors shops. Let it Rip head John Nincehelser said, "We have their (the sponsor's) demographic in the palm of our hand."

They have worked with bands such as the Baxters, Silo the Huskie, Salt Horse, A Planet for Texas, The Stepford 5, Blatant Finger, Twin Cam, Behemoth, the Vincents and the Privileges. Past sponsors include Rag-O-Rama, tattoo shops, Columbus Percussion, WOBN and some record stores.

"It's cool for the scene," Nincehelser said. He said that Let it Rip hopes to unite original Columbus bands into a collective scene.

MEDIA WHORES 7" RELEASE PARTY
Pat Dull dropped me a line to tell me that the Media Whores are hosting a 7" release party February 23 at Bernie's. The Break-Up! Records single features 1984 and Cult of the Psychic Fetus - to which Dull says is a tribute to the goth band of the same name.

Dull said that as an added bonus, the Whores will be giving away a free live CD - Media Whores-Drunk on Pirate Radio - to the first few people that buy the record. The CD was recorded on the Columbus pirate radio station 91.5 FM that was shut down by the FCC last year.

Bob City and Pfifer will also take the stage.

ODDS AND ENDS
Of a Revolution released their new album Risen February 6. It can be purchased at most Columbus music stores or at Best Buy.

Cincinnati's finest, the Afghan Whigs, have announced their breakup after 14 years. Greg Dulli is currently recording a second Twilight Singers record. No word yet on the plans for the rest of the band.

RED HOUR RECORDINGS RESIDENT SITE
Cringe welcomes yet another label to its stable of residents. Red Hour Recordings is run by Red Hot Scott Waters. Scott is responsible for recording many a local punk and rawk band over the last 8 years or so. In fact, much of that is documented in Red Hour's Vent the Spew compilation. February 16 marks the release of a Geraldine 7". Check the site for more releases -- old school and new.

Derek DiCenzoJAZZ AT BERNIE'S AGAIN
Bernie's has brought back its Monday Night Jazz Nights starting this last Monday. Derek DiCenzo and friends (pictured) took the stage with a mixture of Batman, free jazz, standards and lounge. Look for Derek, Circus of Cool and other local jazz and experimental forms to return over the coming weeks.

NOT FADE AWAY 2001
Studio 35 is hosting Not Fade Away 2001, a collection of local artists performing the music of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, JP "Big Bopper" Richardson & Dion and The Bellemonts, February 2.

The Johnny Rebel Band, the Sovines, Myopia, Poop House Reily and the Baxters with Jim Stiers of Blatant Finger are currently slated to appear.

All proceeds go to Studio 35.

SCOTT GORSUCH CD RELEASE
Scott Gorsuch will celebrate the release of his CD Purple February 1 at Little Brother's. The first single from Purple is called "Popular" and has been getting heavy rotation on CD101.

SOMETIMES THINGS CHANGE
Seems that Rob Harvilla is not leaving The Other Paper for the Lone Star state after all. In a twist of fate, Rob is going to become the Arts Editor for TOP, while current Arts Editor Jenny Mullin is going to start writing those arts stories that you've grown accustomed to Rob writing. Go figure.

EMERALD DOWN UPDATE
Columbus's the Emerald Down will play a four song set on Channel 19's noon show February 21. The Emerald Down - they're originally from Washington - will also be playing with fellow Northwesterners 764-HERO at Bernie's March 12.

MUSIC VIDEO IN COWTOWN
A couple of places in Cowtown have started doing music videos. Dan Boyd of Moo Pigface has started doing on location shoots of bands looking to make good videos cheap. He charges $750 per song, and can do a wide variety of ideas and locations.

TIM EASTON CORRECTION
Well, I thought Chad knew something I didn't last week - which is usually the case. While Tim Easton will be performing a few shows with members of Wilco backing him, it looks like the Columbus show is not one of them. Cincy's Rosavelt will be backing him here in Columbus.

And to clear up a few things over on the Cringe message board. Tim E. is just visiting Columbus, not moving back.

SUPERSTAR ROOKIE SPEAKS AND RETURNS
You may remember Superstar Rookie's drummer quitting a few weeks ago. The band returns January 23 with Adam Gunn from A Planet for Texas at the skins. (See "Shows of Note" above.)

And amid all the changes, I kinda let this go unmentioned ... Cringe has a Superstar Rookie interview done just before the shake-up.

ELVIS-A-THON
Little Brother's is hosting an Elvis Presley birthday tribute January 12. Here's the complete list of bands: Lollipop Factory, the Hellbound Truckers, Johnny Rebel, Ray Fuller and the Bluesrockers, the Mendelsonics, Cheatin' Dogs, the Ukelele Man, Freaks of 52 Weeks, the Sovines, Fallon Valley Sinners, Bob Sauls, the Schtick, and Big Ass Yardsale. There will also be an all-star Elvis jam at the end of the night.

The show is hosted by Scott Vezdos of WCBE radio and benefits Huckleberry House. Admission is $5 at the door.

SHORT NORTH YOUTH CHOIR BENEFIT
Sister Flow and The Big Creak will play a benefit January 12 at Oldfield's on High for the Short North Youth Choir. Admission is $4 with proceeds going to the Youth Choir. The show starts at 10 pm.

COLUMBUS ROCKS GOES ONLINE
There's a new MP3.com station in town. Columbus Rocks currently has 22 bands with one song from each band on the station, but they are still looking to add a bunch more.

JAZZ NIGHT AT BERNIE'S

JERRY WICK KILLED IN HIT AND RUN
Former Gaunt singer/guitarist Jerry Wick was killed January 10. He was 33.

According to Columbus police, Wick was riding his bike north on N. 4th St. about 2:30 am when a vehicle struck him at E. Hudson Ave.

Anyone with information about the accident is urged to call Columbus police at 645-4767.

Former Columbusite, and current L.A.-ite, Tim Easton will make his return to Cowtown January 26 at Little Brother's. Ken Coomer, John Stirratt and Jay Bennett of Wilco will back Easton up during the show.

Easton's new album, The Truth About Us, will be released January 23.

LIVING WRECK CD RELEASE PARTY
The Living Wreck will be hosting a CD release party January 19 at Bernie's. The Living Wreck's 10-song album, Rock 'n' Roll is Not Enough, is being released by Hammer and Nail Records.

It's fairly flexible, configurable and expandable, so don't be shy with your suggestions and comments. Many other changes and improvements are also in development - largely taking advantage of the Apache/PHP/MySQL database backend.

WCBE'S CHOICE ALBUMS OF 2000
patrick testa and brad liebling WCBE's Patrick Testa sent an email pointing to the station's 2000 Choice Albums List. There are quite a few local releases on the list this year.

In fact Patrick has mixed in quite a bit of locals in his 9am-12n weekday show, Ante Meridiem. The email distribution of the show's playlist has grown from about 45 last year to 216 currently. To contact Ante Meridiem or to be added to the email playlist, email [email protected].

NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTIES AROUND TOWN
If you're not too busy watching New York City's ball drop on your television or getting away from our little Cowtown, then maybe you should go and check out some music. Plus, champagne is usually free for this one night a year. Here's a (I'm sure partial) list:

ORIGINAL ONIONS REUNITE
Columbus's surf rock legends the Original Onions are reuniting for one night, December 31 at Bernie's. Orchestraville and the Bygones are also taking the stage. Plus you get free champagne.

MARBLES CD RELEASE PARTY
The Marbles are hosting a CD release party for their new Break-Up! Records album, Seduction, January 12 at Bernie's. Columbus's own Twin Cam and Warren, PA's the Peabodys will also take the stage.

HELLBOUND TRUCKERS CD RELEASE
The Hellbound Truckers are releasing their debut CD I just wanna beat the livin shit outta you January 12. The multi-generation Honky-Tonk/Rockabilly band is fronted by Gene Antle who fronted Columbus's Blue Ribbon Boys for over 30 years.

WOBN RELEASES LIVE FROM STUDIO 1
In early January Otterbein radio's The Local Buzz will be releasing Live From Studio 1. HEMP X-MAS
Little Brother's is hosting a cannabis Christmas benefit December 21. Sister Flow, John Mullins, Gravy, Last Arcade, Station and Drummer Collective will perform.

Show starts at 8 pm. Admission is $2 before 10 pm and $4 thereafter. There's a free raffle ticket with admission.

SATELLITE WREN BENEFIT AT BERNIE'S
Bernie's is hosting a Satellite Wren benefit show December 22. Screaming Urge, Bob Sauls, Mike Rock & Ravage and the ever TBAs will take the stage to benefit the homeless. Cover is $4.

MIRANDA SOUND UPDATE
Miranda Sound is finished with the recording of their debut record, tentatively titled Baby Inertia. The album features 12 original tracks recorded at Workbook Studio in Columbus; engineered by Neal Schmitt and produced by Schmitt and Billy Peake.

Album artwork is going to include a painting from nationally renowned Columbus artist Ron Arps. A CD release is being planned for mid-March.

GREEN SKY GREY CD RELEASE
Green Sky Grey is hosting a CD release party January 13 at Newport Music Hall. The Stepford 5, Rezzin, and On Tap will also take the stage. Tickets are on sale now at all Ticketmaster locations. For more information, email Green Sky Grey at [email protected].

TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE CD RELEASE PARTY
The Terrifying Experience will usher in their brand new album, Magnetic Breakthrough, with a CD release party January 12 at Ruby Tuesday. Bob City and Shesus will also take the stage. LEVELED RELEASES ALBUM

WATERSHED UPDATE
Watershed is hosting a Christmas party December 23 at Andyman's Treehouse. To get fans in the Watershed X-mas spirit, the band has re-released the three-song CD Still Love X-Mas. The album is available at World Record and Borders Music (4545 Kenny Rd), or via the airwaves at CD101 and WCBE. Watershed is also planning to spend two weeks in December finishing a new record. As well recording some new tunes, the band have decided to re-cut "Wallflower Child" and "Just for Show".

SEASON'S END, SUPERSTAR ROOKIE LOSE KEY MEMBERS
Keyboardist Matt Ebright has left Season's End. The band will continue performing as a guitar/bass/drums trio with potential for occassiona guests.

Superstar Rookie's drummer Copper has left the band. With a recently released CD on Diaphragm Records (see below), my guess is SSR will stick together with a new drummer.

FROM OHIO MUSICIAN TO MR. MIDI RECORDS
The people behind Ohio Musician Magazine and numerous related ventures have expanded once again. They now include Mr. Midi Records. With mirrored sites across the globe, people from all around the world will be able to buy from their roster via credit cards. E-mail [email protected] if yer interested in selling your music through Mr. Midi.

DIAPHRAGM RECORDS AND RED HOUR SITES
The Diaphragm Records site on Cringe just went up. Label head Ike and I still working on an mp3 section, but the other sections are in place.

Look for a site for "Red Hot" Scott Waters' Red Hour Recordings in the coming weeks.

PET THERAPY BENEFIT
Watershed, Fenster, and Superstar Rookie are playing December 8 at Little Brother's for Pet Therapy.

Pet therapy is an organization that takes cats and dogs (ya know, pets) to terminally or otherwise ill patients in hospitals and hospices.

The show starts at 10 pm. It's $5 at the door.

LOCAL SHOWCASE
PromoWest and ColumbusMusic.com have put together another show for the locals. This time it'll be a hard rock bill with Cringe, D*fekt, Thumpfluid, and Kettle.

The show is December 15 at the Newport. Tickets are $6 and are available through Ticketmaster or any of the bands.

LIVING WRECK CD RELEASE PARTY
The Living Wreck is hosting its very own CD release party December 9 at Bernie's. Pretty Mighty Mighty and the Velveteens will also take the stage.

The Hellbound Truckers, the Marbles, and Leveled are also planning CD releases.

THE STEPFORD FIVE RELEASES CHRISTMAS SINGLE
"This Christmas," a special holiday CD-R single from The Stepford Five, will be available November 28. The three song single, which includes two acoustic tracks recorded live on-air in the WOBN studio, is limited to just 100 copies and can only be purchased through the band's web site at stepfordfive.com.

The single is $3.00, plus $2.00 for shipping through the Web site. Make sure to order the single by December 15 to receive it by Christmas (with the Christmas postal rush and all).
