CITYSEARCH/MSN AWARDS
Just when you thought it was safe to go outside ... CitySearch/MSN releases its awards.

WOODSIDE QUINN RELEASES ALBUM

LOUGHTON SOUND RELEASES CDS

NEW BAND ALERT
Columbus's newest band, Teeth of the Hydra, will be performing for the first time Monday November 20 at Bernie's with New Terror Class. Teeth of the Hydra features members of Betaroric, Three Studies for a Crucifixion, and the Lack.

CD COMP MADNESS
Stainless Mind is trying to put together a four-band compilation, releasing it sometime in January or February. The band is still looking for two other bands for the project, with each band getting three songs on the album. If interested and have 3 songs recorded, email Mike at [email protected] or call 766-7288.

AND THE WINNER IS ...
Winners for the 2000 Greater Columbus Local Music Awards were announced at the awards ceremony November 8 at Little Brother's. Here are the winners:

SOVINES CD RELEASE SHOW
The Sovines are having a CD release show November 18 at Little Brother's. The CD, their sophomore effort is titled The Sad Last Days of the Sovines.

Also on the bill are the Peachbones and Lonesome Bob, a critically acclaimed songwriter from Nashville, TN.

PERFORMANCE BY ANNIE SPRINKLE
Sex positive feminist, performance artist, and former porn star Annie Sprinkle will speak 7:30 pm, November 16 at Denison University in Granville. Sprinkle is the author of works such as The Herstory of Porn and Post Porn Modernist: My 25 Years as a Multimedia Whore. The event is sponsored by Women's Emphasis and Women's Programming of Denison University.

UH, SORRY ...
The date of the Soda Vs Pop CD release show is December 14 at Bernie's. SVP is also playing Bernie's November 21.

COUNTERFEIT HEIST CLOSED?
I don't have any further info, but some friends noticed the Counterfeit Heist was closed this last weekend.

CRINGE TO SERVE ANEW
The new Cringe server is finally here. We should be transitioning things to it over the next several weeks. There are also many other changes, improvements and enhancements planned as we move forward with the new server. This would be a great time for suggestions, critiques, pointers, or just things you like and don't like about how Cringe is setup.

For the geeks, the planned configuration includes FreeBSD, Apache, PHP, Perl, and Mysql. Cringe will also have a lot more control since this is our own dedicated/co-located server. Special thanks to Internet Concourse for its continued support with this step. Concourse has provided the Live Shows Calendar and Cringe with web space and virtual hosting from the very beginning.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
This year's Greater Columbus Local Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award (that's a mouthful) is going to go to Vaughn Wiester. Wiester has been playing music in Columbus since the late '60s, currenty playing in his very own Famous Jazz Orchestra and Brasileira.

He will be honored at the GCLMA showcase November 8 at Little Brother's.

DAVE CHISHOLM BAND WINS BLUES CHALLENGE
The Dave Chisholm Band won the Columbus Blues Alliance's First Annual Blues Challenge on October 29. By winning the competition, they also won the honor of representing Central Ohio at next February's International Blues Competition in Memphis.

12 OZ. AND A SPLIT 7"

SODA VS POP CD RELEASE
Soda Vs Pop will be releasing their album Songs For Show and Tell December 12 at Bernie's. The release is limited since the band is releasing it themselves; however, the band is currently looking for a label. No word yet on opening acts for the show.

DEVILCAKE LIVES AUTOREVERSE DIES
With the reforming of the band Devilcake, Ian Stewart says he simply doesn't have the time to keep up with AUTOreverse. An internationally-renowned magazine, AUTOreverse reviews and caters to thousands of hometapers from every country with inexpensive multitrackers.

Ian didn't ask me say this and I'm not sure how he feels about it, but I think there's a Lowdown reader or two out there that may already involved in similar projects. Ya may wanna see if you can work something out here with AUTOreverse.

CAPITOL PUNISHMENT AT HIGH FIVE
Glazed Records sent an email saying that Eric Davidson, singer from the New Bomb Turks has put together Capitol Punishment: A Two Moon Spree of Killer Rock'n'Roll.

The show happens November 3 and 4 at High Five. Here's the line-up:

Each night starts at 9 pm and costs $8.

AWARDS NIGHT REARS ITS UGLY HEAD
The Greater Columbus Local Music Awards is November 8 at Little Brother's. The show is a Grammy-style production with 30 nominees (most of whom you might have heard of) battling it out for 10 awards.

The show also boosts live performances from Scrawl, Hoodoo Soul Band, Fletch, Jim Maneri, Pretty Mighty Mighty, K-Luv, Buc Wild and Brandi Lynn Howard. All proceeds from the event go to the Short North Youth Choir.

ACOUSTIC '80S POWER BALLAD NIGHT
Andyman's Treehouse will host a '80s Power Ballad Night November 11.

The show will feature Rhonda Everitt of Dayton's RHE, Billy Peake of Miranda Sound, Wolfgang Parker, Quinn Falon, Chuck from The Vague and Rick from Pfifer covering such bands as Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Guns 'n Roses, Motley Crue, Poison, Faster Pussycat, Ozzy Osborne, Enuff z'nuff, and Tesla.

GOSSAMER CD RELEASE

OPEN SOURCE RADIO
From this week's Local Play, I thought it would be worth mentioning here too ...

This one's for you open source geeks and local music fans out there. Open Source Radio is currently an open format Webcast with freeform debating on all things Open Source (think free, open development, powerful software), local music and beyond. The weekly 2 hour program broadcasts live Thursdays 8-10pm with rebroadcasts several times throughout the week at http://www.opensourceradio.com/.

Oh, and before ya think this sounds dull, the DJs have this to say: "We are going to try to put on a good show, mostly we are going to try to make light of things. We all love to laugh. JELLO BIAFRA SPEAKS NOVEMBER 17
Jello Biafra, Dead Kennedy and sociopolitical commentator, will be speaking at at OSU's Independence Hall. Jello Biafra will be discussing several issues, including:

GREAT PLAINS REUNION
Great Plains will reunite October 21 at High Five to promote their new album Great Plains, Length of Growth 1981-89. The album is a retrospective set put out by their old label, Old 3C Records.

Cleveland's Cobra Verde and Old 3C labelmates Log will also take the stage. Show starts at 10 pm.

SODA VS POP UPDATE
Soda Vs Pop is going to release about 250 of their CD Songs for Show and Tell, probably in mid-December.

Since the demise of their label, Groundswell Records, SVSP has scrounged for money and resources to get this CD into the hands of the public.

CD RELEASE SHOWS
Here we go with another round of CDs coming out by some fine Cowtown bands:

Fenster CD release party with Fletch and Poophouse Reilly October 20 at Little Brother's. That same night, Wolfgang Parker will celebrate their new release at Andyman's Treehouse.

THE RETURN OF THE DISHES
The Dishes are coming back to Cowtown to road-test a couple new songs and a new lady drummer. They're playing with Sweep the Leg Johnny October 26 at Bernie's.

LEANNE M. AFTER DARK SHOWCASE SATURDAY
Leanne M. Studios and the After Dark E-Zine are hosting their second showcase at Breezer's Saturday, October 21. The line-up features Shovelhead, Laid to Rest, Psycho Scenario, 13 South, Vile and Instigation. There is a Halloween Costume Contest as well with prizes supplied by the bands and by Concrete Management. This is an 18 and over show with a $5 cover. The music starts promptly at 7pm.

BOTULISM EYE BROKE BOMBSHELTER ROCK!
Thursday, October 19 at Little Brother's Whiskey Cannonball, Grafton, Guinea Worms and Cheater Slicks will be performing songs from an upcoming compilation. Botulism Music plans to release the comp, Songs From The Bunker (Hasn't The World Already Ended?), this fall.

According to an evidently no longer sleep-deprived Botulism tribesman, "Botulism Music is a secret tribal society, we got bandshakes and shit. It started as an Athens cassette only label and hasn't really gotten much bigger than that though now Botulism music has representatives in Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and Seattle. Eye broke productions just came to me in a dream."

COLUMBUS PERCUSSION SITE UPDATES
Columbus Percussion has added a few new components to their site. Not only does it now include gig listings, but also a message board where ya can communicate with drummers here and all over the world.

ERIC ZIELINSKI INCIDENT LIVE RECORDING
Wanna be recorded for posterity? This Saturday, October 21 at Oldfield's on 4th eRic ZieLinski Incident will be attempting to record for a live release. eRic will be performing one acoustic set with his band backing him the rest of the night.

CRINGE TICKER FADES IN
Well, I've updated the little Cringe news ticker you Netscape Navigator users have been enjoying for a few months. Now it is actually a fader and should work on all 4.0 and above browsers on Mac and Windows. Let me know if ya see any problems ... or nothing at all. (For the record, I'm a big time Mac/Netscape user. Microsoft makes me cringe.)

THE FEDS AREN'T THAT BAD AFTER ALL ...
At the Columbus Blues Alliance Blues Jam of Sunday, October 1, CBA President Maggie West announced to a crowd of about 100 people that the kindler, gentler IRS has forgiven the CBA tax penalty.

The CBA is thanking everyone who helped them work through their legal mess. There is a rumored free membership appreciation event coming up soon.

GCLMA SHOWCASE WEEKEND
Here's the official update on venues and performers for the Greater Columbus Local Music Awards Showcase Weekend:

All acts have been nominated in one or more catagory. All proceeds go to the Godman Guild, a non-profit which provides elementary music education to children.

Don't forget about the Awards Ceremony at Little Brother's on Nov. 8th.

BANDS NEEDED FOR COMMUNITY ACCESS CALENDAR
Community21, the public access station in Columbus is looking for bands. As a community outreach project, they produce a Community Calendar. Basically it is video they shoot of local events and interesting places, with graphics of non-profit organizations events overtop, and music. What they have decided to do is promote local artists, Columbus and Ohio.

The artist would get is an hour of his/her music played for 2 1/2 weeks, mostly between the hours of midnight and 8am. Community21 reaches close to 350,000 cable subscribing homes so this would be great exposure for the musicians.

They cannot pay, but will put a graphic at the end that says music for Community Calendar was provided by (Musician) here is how you can reach them. Their web site is www.comm21.org, their station e-mail is [email protected], or you can call Mary Rathke at 614-224-2288.

DEATH OF GROUNDSWELL
Groundswell Records has gone the way of the dinosaur. The reason, lack of time and money.

The result, no more records, silly. The F**bomb and Them Wranch CDs are still available at fine campus record stores. The Soda Vs Pop album is having a limited self-release, but it might be picked up by another label shortly (possibly Lizard Family).

ECC GETTIN' BUSY
CBS's threat against The Evolution Control Committee's use of Dan Rather in "Rocked By Rape" seems to have spread from the pages of Wired to NPR's All Things Considered and C-SPAN. Sounds like a good time to take the show on road. Well, whadda ya know, this month Mark Gunderson/ECC has a few venues lined up in Europe, including Milan, Italy and select spots in Germany. Stops in England or Holland may also be added. And once ECC is back, work on a new CD and subsequent shows will be at the top of the list.

LOCAL PLAY AND CONTACT LISTINGS UPDATED
The Cringe band, venues, media and labels contact listings were updated a bit over the weekend. Most of the changes were in the band section. Local Play, tracking local broadcasts, was also updated Sunday.

SUPERSTAR ROOKIE CD RELEASE PARTY
Superstar Rookie is having a CD release party Nov. 11 at Little Brother's. The album, The Problem With Words, was recorded in May at Workbook Studios. Diaphragm Records labelmates A Planet for Texas will also take the stage.

VAGUE UPDATE
The Vague drummer Chris Mills has decided to leave the band to pursue some solo music he has written. According to the band, Mills felt his heart wasn't in it anymore and he wishes to do other types of rock music.

As an aside, the band has a track on the new Spin Magazine sampler (the magazine with David Lee Roth on the cover).

BIG HELLO CD RELEASE PARTY
Break-Up! Records is hosting the Big Hello (Chicago) CD release party October 14 at Bernie's. The Orange Album is Break-Up! Records' 14th release.

The Pop Quiz and The Media Whores will help the Big Hello usher in the album.

AFTER-WORK BLOWOUT
Colin Gawl of Watershed has started a "Weekly Wednesday After-Work Blowout" at Andyman's Treehouse. He will play between 7-10 p.m. each Wednesday until someone tells him to stop. The cover is only a buck.

SIRENS CD RELEASE PARTY
The Sirens, a singer/songwriter duo of Kay Harris & Molly Parken, will host the release of their self-produced debut CD 9:30 pm, September 28 at The Grandview Café.

GCLMA SHOWCASE WEEKEND
The Greater Columbus Local Music Awards will be hosting a showcase weekend, October 12-14 at various locations. Thursday, October 12 will be at Oldfield's on High; Friday, October 13 will be at Thirsty Ear Tavern; and Saturday, October 14 will be at a location to be announced. The showcase weekend is where the public and the members of the Award Selection Committee will be able to sample some of the nominees before voting for the winners.

Tickets for the showcase weekend, and the awards ceremony will be available online, as well as at Little Brother's, Columbus Alive, and CD101.

CBA SPONSORS BLUES CHALLENGE
The Columbus Blues Alliance is be sponsoring a "Blues Challenge" beginning at 12 p.m., October 29 at Club 504. The winning band will receive $500 cash and the opportunity to compete in the 2001 International Blues Challenge in Memphis sponsored by the Blues Foundation.

The entry fee is $25 per band. Bands may not be signed with any national or international record label, and the band must originate and reside within the state of Ohio. Complete details and a downloadable application are posted on the Columbus Blues Alliance web site at http://www.colsbluesalliance.org/.

MUSIC FEST AT HIGH FIVE

ULTRA SOUND SHOWCASE
ColumbusMusic.com and Promowest Productions present Ultra Sound, a concert featuring No Tag Backs, The Velveteens, Orchestraville, and Uncle Sam's Dream Machine. The show is Saturday, September 30 at the Newport.

The bands playing at the ColumbusMusic.com Showcase have been some of the most popular downloads from the site. Tickets for the show are $6, and are available through all Ticketmaster locations, participating bands, and at the door.

BERNIE'S GETS HOUSE ACT
Bernie's has added a house act, starting Tuesday, September 26. Jimmy Lee Guitar is an acoustic act that plays new and old party r & b and knows covers.

According to Tony Painter, Jimmy Lee Guitar appeals to the fraternity/sorority crowds. He said that "it was decided to make this move as we needed one other night (at least) where we didn't have three crappy bands playing to no one while the few patrons that were in the place got tired of hearing the loud noise and left."

COLUMBUS SENIOR MUSICIANS HALL OF FAME
The Columbus Senior Musicians Hall of Fame was founded in 1994 by Robert D. Thomas and David W. Meyers. The Hall aims to recognize Columbus area musicians whose careers have significantly enriched Columbus's musical heritage. The Hall also aims to document the history of popular music in Columbus. To be considered for the Hall of Fame, a musician must have been born at least 60 years ago and have lived in Central Ohio.

THE MOUNTAIN JAM 2000
The Mountain Jam is September 22 and 23 at Camp Sharp Corner in Chillicothe. The Mountain Jam features performances by The Moondance Experiment, The Big Creak, LS3, Quanah Parker, Vile, Soul Cypher, and Farmhouse.

Tickets are $15.

CAFE BOURBON STREET GETS PA
I'm told Cafe Bourbon Street now has a 900 Watt Peavy PA with loudspeakers. You'll still need to bring your own microphones and monitors to polish it off; but least those are a bit easier to lug around.

BLUE JACKETS NATIONAL ANTHEM CONTEST
Ten local singers are up for the spot of regular Blue Jackets National Anthem singer. You can listen to and vote for your pick at http://www.bluejackets.com/fans/anthem.html through September 24. On the September 30 the 6 finalists will participate in live auditions.

CD101-DERFEST 2000
WWCD's CD101derfest is September 17 at Polaris Ampitheatre.

The show's featured performers are Everclear, Bob Mould, Harvey Danger, Vibrolush, and Soul Asylum. Also on the bill on Columbus's very own Watershed, Howlin' Maggie, and Palo Alto.

Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.

ROCK 'N' REEL FRIDAY NIGHTS
Studio 35 is starting a new series this Friday, September 15. Rock 'N' Reel Friday nights will feature a variety of Columbus bands, plus a movie to boot.

LAID TO REST FEST 2000
This year's installment of the Laid to Rest Fest is September 16 at Fran Bar Park near Pataskala. The line-up includes Laid to Rest, Psycho Scenario, Vile, Drug Cult Society, Strut Train, C-4, Element, and Renasci. Tickets are $10.

THE VINCENTS CD RELEASE
The Vincents will be hosting their very own CD release party September 14 at Little Brother's. A Planet for Texas will be taking the stage.

HIGH 5 ARTIE MOVES ON
Arturo DeLeon (uh, Artie) dropped Cringe an email to let us know he is no longer booking at High 5. Though he's been very happy with the crowds; he's decided it's time to "move on." Booking inquiries should now be directed to Diana Blankenship.

NO HORNS
Guitarist/vocalist/soloist and music journalist Ryan Horns now has a full band. The (in)famous members include Bill Learned on lead guitar and Cleopatra Grippers Jeff Rosenbloom on bass and Doug Wells on drums. Look for their first show any day now.

OHIO MUSICIAN MAGAZINE
The latest Ohio Musician Magazine is now live. Aside from a feature on NUdE and its West Coast tour, this issue includes info for recording engineers, producers and Sonic Foundry.

By now many of you have probably noticed Cringe's latest experiment: A bit more on-site advertising. The CD Now button seemed not to cause much concern or problem over the last couple years, so I figured why not try some others. For now I'll try to feature ads that are either music related or at least of interest to many readers. Some ads earn Cringe a few pennys per click. Others earn us a small percentage of purchases made through the links. I'm also looking at some that pay just for displaying the ad and other programs. Feed back is more than welcome.

HIGH FIVE 3RD ANNIVERSARY PARTY
High Five and Jack Daniel's are teaming up to help the club celebrate its third anniversary. In addition to a week's worth of music, bar patrons will have a chance of winning prizes including a trip to Lynchburgh, Tennessee.

It's happening the week of September 4-9 with bands each night. Monday, September 4 features DJ Tix Eon. Tuesday, Sept. 5 features Delightfully Strange, Twin Cam, and Madison. Wednesday, September 6 features Rancid Yak Butter Tea Party, the Bloody Matt Dillons, and the Washouts. Thursday, September 7 features Twin Cam, the Marbles, the Media Whores, and the Pop Quiz during the "New Wave Mind Meld."

UKELELE MAN CD RELEASE PARTY
Ukelele Man (aka Tom Harker) is hosting a CD release party September 8 at Little Brother's. The Lilybandits, The Sovines, and Dan Dougan will help usher in Harker's album Sumoninjalele.

SORT OF LIKE A LIVE MIX TAPE ...
Novac, Blow Up, and the Montreal Curse will be playing Thursday, August 31 at High Five. As an experiment the three bands will set up at the same time, and will alternate playing songs.

THE BLUES HARMONICA BLOWOUT 2000
The Blues Harmonica Blowout 2000 is a free concert featuring Mark Hummel, Charlie Musselwhite, Billy Boy Arnold, Paul DeLay, Billy Branch, Gary Primich, Fingers Taylor and Junior Watson.

The show is 5 pm to 1 am, October 7 at the North Market. It is scheduled to coincide with the first Columbus Blue Jackets hockey game.

BUSKERS WELCOME
Melvin B Strange of Out of Order has a little back to school project for all of you. The first day of Welcome Week at OSU is Monday, September 18. It includes booths and displays of college oriented organizations and businesses. Melvin is organizing and encouraging local musicians to get together their acoustic sets and get out to OSU to expose the masses to local music that first day. Why not get 'em while they're young and impressionable, eh?

Campus/street players used to be fairly common place around OSU -- especially on warm weekend nights. People like John Thompson, Luke, Tim Easton, Pat Dull and sometimes even me were regulars on the streets around OSU years ago. Maybe this will bring it back.

    12 OZ. REBELS RELEASE SECOND ALBUM
    Beer-fueled punk-rockers The 12 Oz. Rebels have released their second album Let's Get It On. The band describe the album as "10 tracks of no holds barred, full throttle punk rock and roll that'll keep you rockin' all night long, and cummin' back for more!"

    The album was recorded and mastered by Dan Boyd at Moo Pigface Recording in Columbus. If it's anything like the first one, they recorded, mixed, and mastered in one beer soaked day.

    REALFEST 2000
    The fourth annual RealFest is September 30 in Lancaster, Ohio. Columbus's Stepford 5, Jerkwater Jive, and Sean Woosley Band have been chosen for the bill. In addition, Zero Parade, Pasquali, Porus, and Rubberband Racecar Go will take the stage.

    Gates open at 3:30pm, bands start at 4:15. Tickets are $7 in advance or $10 at the door, which you can either purchase through the or through the information listed on the RealFest Web site.

    ONLY FLESH RELEASES ALBUM
    Only Flesh has released its second album, Dissecting the Skin Box. The album features 75 minutes of the band's industrial, noise, metal, and goth blend of music. Plus, it's only $5.

    PFIFER REPLACES DRUMMER
    Power-pop trio Pfifer has replaced drummer Dave Kinsinger, who left to teach English for a year in Chinju, South Korea.

    BOB CITY CORRECTIVE SITE
    We have a correction to the Bob City CD release party on September 15 at Ruby Tuesday. The line up includes Geraldine (Athens,Oh), The Spiveys (Chicago, IL), and The Bloody Matt Dillons.

    Also, Bob City is the newest resident of Cringe. Pretty Mighty Mighty bassist John Fitzgerald put together the site. Perty nifty for his first site ever, eh? Oh, and ya can blame me for the CD layout.

    COMFEST BRAVADO
    Well, I finally committed myself to doing the final edits to my reflections and reviews of ComFest 2000. Ya can find the results in the current Features section. There is also a new review of The Bravado in the current Reviews section.

    CHEAP OR FREE PC WANTED
    Cringe is doing some server hardware/hosting updating. I think we have a donated PC, but there have been some delays in getting it. So just in case that doesn't pan out, anyone out there have a free or cheap PC? A Pentium II/III, 233MHz or better should do fine. I'm guessing we'll probably upgrade to fast, large drives and ample RAM, but if those come included, who am I to complain? Oh, we're looking at a FreeBSD, Apache, PERL 5, PHP4 and MYSQL based Web server, just so ya know. Oh, server space or something to that effect could be worked out as a trade. Any givers or tips?

    GO ROBOT, GO! CHARTS ON CMJ
    The latest Go Robot, Go! CD, Super Vacation, was the 10th most added record at college radio last week, and this week debuted at #119 on the College Music Journal airplay charts.

    This is the second Go Robot, Go! CD to make it onto the CMJ national college radio charts. Their previous CD, Convertible, charted on CMJ less than a year ago.

    BLATANT FINGER CD RELEASE
    Punk rockers (a la Social Distortion) Blatant Finger will host a CD release party September 23 at Bernie's.

    The band will celebrate the release of its long-awaited album, "Sit and Spin." The Kingrods, The Baxters, and Behemoth will also be on the bill.

    ULTIMATE FAKEBOOK AT BERNIE'S
    Ultimate Fakebook will bring their tour to Columbus August 31 at Bernie's. The band is supporting its major label debut "i>This Is Laughing Week.     HIGH ON FIRE AT HIGH FIVE
    High on Fire, the stoner-rock band spawned from the ashes of Earache Records favorite burnouts Sleep will be playing at High Five October 5.

    Completing the bill will be Behemoth (ex-Lordburger, Swivelarm Battlegrip) and the Gasohol. Admission is $6.

    PSYCHORAMA FILM FESTIVAL AT STUDIO 35
    Studio 35 is hosting a film festival, starting at 8 p.m. Aug. 26 and going until 10 a.m. Aug. 27. The festival features Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Sid and Nancy, Foxy Brown, Psych-out, Reefer Madness, and a couple of TBAs.

    Advance tickets are $15, and are on sale at the theater now.

Finally, they've added the Sunday night grease-ball with host and DJ Johnny Rebel spinning all yer favourite "-a-billy's" (rock, punk, and gothabilly).

    REALFEST REQUESTS
    And because I'm getting lazy and tired, here's a little info straight from the RealFest folks:

    Central Ohio's premiere local music event is coming in late September 2000. "The RealFest!", a one day festival centrally located in between Columbus and Athens just outside of Lancaster. The RealFest! offers a diverse variety of musical talent from within the local areas and abroad. The main purpose of RealFest! is to support local musicians and the idea of the event is to give local bands a chance to perform for a large audience of all ages and musical preferences. The underlying meaning to all of this is: "We want to shamelessly self promote the bands through this large gig".

    We are looking for musicians and bands that would be interested in participating in this 3rd annual event.

    BENEFIT FOR BERNIE'S
    Bernie's is hosting a benefit show for itself on August 19. Pat Dull and the Media Whores, Flipping Hades, Spider Friendz, Black Love, and a couple of TBAs are scheduled to play.

    The show starts at 9 pm, and a $7 donation will be taken at the door. Proceeds go towards rent and utilities. According to Tony Painter, "It gets real slow in August and with the air cranking, it gets tough to meet ends."

    BOB CITY CD RELEASE
    The much-anticipated Bob City CD release show is Sept. 15 at Ruby Tuesdays. On stage with Bob City will be The Townsmen, formerly Little Pants.

    FALL HOOKAHVILLE 2000
    The fall version of Hookahville 2000 is September 1 and 2 at Buckeye Lake Music Center near Thornville, Ohio. The two-day event features performances by: Ekoostik Hookah, and David Crosby. Tickets are $50.

    SKA AND REGGAE COMES TO LITTLE BROTHER'S
    A big ska show is coming to Little Brother's on August 23rd. The headliners are King Django and the Scofflaws with Spectre as the opener. Admission is $5.00. Show starts at 10pm.

    Also coming this month to the Little Brother's stage is Buju Banton on August 17, and Burning Spear on August 29.

    OUT OF ORDER JOINS IDIOTPRESS.COM
    Out of Order is joining forces with www.campusdistrict.com and the makers of www.varsitytrader.com to bring you a web site that will serve the people of the Central Ohio Community. The web site, www.idiotpress.com, will feature rental information, local chats, used bookstores, nightclubs and information on the music scene.

    Out of Order will be starting an Internet radio station that will only include music from the Ohio area, and will be starting a gig swap section for bands outside Columbus.

    Idiotpress will eventually invade every major college city in the Big Ten and possibly more, including music representatives in East Lansing, MI; Ann Arbor, MI; Chicago, IL: Minneapolis, MN; Pittsburgh, PA; Indianapolis,IN; Cleveland, OH; Charleston, WV; Lexington, KY; and more.

    BUSH AND GORE 2000
    NgiN is promoting an August 27 Columbus show for the national Bush and Gore 2000 tour. The show features Rorscach Test, Bile, N17, and Snakeriver Conspiracy.

    The show also features a pageant on the weird and bizarre to be judged by the Internet fans. The show starts at 7 p.m., and will be at the Alrosa Villa. The cost of the show is $10.

    LET THE NEW ISSUE BEGIN
    Well, I've initiated the new issue of Cringe. Look for my long, and long overdue Comfest 2000 review any day now, along with a couple other reviews and features in the coming weeks. And, as always, ya can submit your own reviews, features, etc. if yer tired of waiting for me or someone else ta do it.

    WHO AND WHAT CRINGE COVERS
    Over the last few months it's become clear that there are some questions and confusions as to who or what Cringe is. With this being a new issue, I thought it would be a good time ta review just that.

    First, Cringe.com is not related to the local band Cringe ... I'm not saying that out of some disrespect or dislike but just ta inform those who don't realize it. I've found the mistaken association in conversation, email and phone calls -- sometimes from people I assumed knew the two are not related.

    Second, Cringe has always specified that it focuses on the OSU/Short North area of Columbus. You'll find this mentioned in the FAQ, the Live Shows calendars and many other places on the site. So if you see certains bands, scenes, venues, shows and such not being covered here, that may very well be the reason. There's still plenty to cover in this little region without spreading it out to a wider region. That's not to say we won't expand -- especially if we have some help from readers familiar with and dedicated to these other scenes. And with the new server and such in the works, it should become perty easy to expand. In the meantime, I need to get my rest sometime.

    Oh, and since I'm here, I wanted ta mention that we have hit an all-time high in terms of unique visits -- over 28,000 in both June and July. That's over 900 visits per day!

    SILO THE HUSKIE CD RELEASE
    Silo the Huskie's self-titled debut on Cargo Records hits stores July 25. The CD release party is July 27 at Little Brother's, and the Digital Club Network will broadcast the party on the web. Three Fingers Down, Stainless Mind, and Verbow are also on the bill.

    In other news, Silo has been selected to play this year's North by Northwest festival on Sept. 20-23 in Portland.

    F**BOMB CD RELEASE PARTY
    F**bomb, your humble writer's band, will host their very own CD release party August 11 at Bernie's. Silo the Huskie and the Jive Turkeys are helping the band celebrate the release of their self-titled full-length debut.

    In related news, F**bomb will be stopping by the CD101 studios for an air-on interview on the Independent Playground August 6.

    STRANGE DAZE 2000 TRAVELLING SPECTACULAR
    The Strange Daze 2000 Travelling Spectacular is coming July 31 to Little Brother's. The show features three current members of the legendary Hawkwind, plus ex-Hawk Harvey Bainbridge's band. Local space-rockers Quarkspace open the show.

    Blues rockers Uncle Sam's Dream Machine will join the Bob Dylan and Phil Lesh tour to perform on three tour stops.

    Templeton is set to reenter the clubs with a new lineup. Joining frontman Christian Hurd and drummer Ben Kemp will be Tony Nguyen on guitar and Kaleb Bandy on bass.

    Kaleb might be familiar to many as a member of Stone Velvet. Look for Templeton to be playing out again in August with preparations for a second CD already in the works.

    JAZZ AND RIBS FEST 2000
    This year's Jazz and Ribs Fest is July 21-23 along the downtown Riverfront. The featured performers are Kenny G on Friday, Los Lobos on Saturday, and Kevin Eubanks on Sunday.

    SILO THE BUSY
    As if having a CD re-release next week isn't enough, Silo the Huskie has been selected to play this years NXNW Festival in Portland, Oregon, September 20-23. Oh, their self-titled debut CD is being re-release by Cargo Records July 25. The July 27 release party will be part of Little Brother's Digital Club Network live Webcasts.

    MONSTER TRUCK FIVE REISSUED
    Seldom Scene is planning a reissue of Monster Truck Five's Gimme Five 10" on CD. The CD will also include the SF Sister 7". Chrome Frog originally issued both albums.

    Seldom Scene CEO, Bim, said he recently obtained remastered and enhanced CDs completely suitable for mastery. Bim said, "[The album is] a classic record on any scale of rock and roll. I just wish Chris (Wilson) was here to enjoy it."

    STEVE'S STORAGE SHED SHINDIG
    A live concert/party is happening July 22 at the Columbus Recreational Storage - 1607 Woodland Ave.

    Steve's Storage Shed Shindig features Silo the Huskie, The Bedrockers, Zero Rain, NgiN, F**bomb, Grim Daze, Stainless Mind, and Mrs. Children.

    Guided By Voices's hybrid label, Rockathon Records, now has it's own domain: http://www.rockathonrecords.com/. The label's stable also includes releases by Columbus' Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments and 84 Nash. Regular Cringe contributer Dan Piercy authored the site, though he tells me he's not responsible for "that awful guestbook."

    WATERSHED CD SINGLE SERIES
    Watershed is releasing a new limited edition single every two months. Each numbered single will contain rare unavailable recordings culled from studio outtakes, live stuff, new songs, and out of print releases.

    The first single features Mercurochrome and Good Day from their latest sessions in Michigan, as well as Easy Way Out, an outtake from the Star Vehicle sessions.

    The CD singles will be available via Watershed's Web site (www.netset.com/watershed/) and at selected shows.

    SILO THE HUSKIE NEWS
    Silo the Huskie's self-titled debut CD is being release on July 18 by Cargo Records. The record will be available at all of your better mom and pop college record stores, as well as Barnes and Noble, Virgin Megastores, and Tower Records.

    Clothing retailers, Abercrombie and Fitch have selected 3 Silo the Huskie MP3's to be available for download from their site. The MP3's should be available for download on July 14 at http://www.abercrombie.com/. Click on A+F lifestyles.

    NEW CENTRAL OHIO E-ZINE LAUNCHED
    Tinnitus was started to try to jumpstart a music scene in Zanesville. However, it has grown and now is dedicated to supporting the music scenes in the smaller towns of Central Ohio such as Newark, Granville, New Lexington, Zanesville, and Lancaster.

    THUMPFLUID/KING'S X ON AUGUST 11
    Columbus' Thumpfluid will be opening for Kings X and Podunk when those bands make their way to the AlRosa Villa on Friday August 11th.

    Tickets are $13 available through Ticketmaster or Thumpfluid. If tickets are bought through Thumpfluid, there will be no Ticketmaster service charges. Thumpfluid will also give anyone who buys a ticket through them a ticket for a future Thumpfluid show.

    STUDIO 35 ROCK AND ROLL BENEFIT
    Seven locals bands are playing their favorite songs from movies to help ailing theater Studio 35.

    The July 7 show features The Pop Quiz, The Sovines, Hensley Sturgis, The Lilybandits, the Woosley Band, Fred Haring, and the X-Rated Cowboys. Studio 35 will be showing the Sex Pistols' documentary The Filth and the Fury at 7 pm.

    All proceeds will be used to make many long overdue and much needed repairs to seats and the theater building in general.

    Admission is $7.00 at the door, or you can stop by the theater any evening between June 28 and July 6 to buy advance discount tickets for just $5.00.

    CBA TAXMAN BLUES BENEFIT
    Due to an oversight and/or misunderstanding, the Columbus Blues Alliance has been hit with a tax penalty of nearly $5000 by the IRS for not reporting that it didn't owe any taxes for 1996-1998. CBA is working to resolve the issue, but believes it will owe something. Members and friends are being asked to help out in two ways:

    1. Donate what you can. Send any donations to 1350 W. Fifth Ave, Suite 10-D, Columbus, Ohio, 43212 with "Tax Relief" on the envelope.
    2. Attend the CBA Taxman Blues Benefit show on July 15 at the Thirsty Ear Tavern. A bunch of blues bands are donating their talent to the benefit. CD's, T-shirts, hats, etc. will also be raffled off.
